The two goals scored against West Ham have enabled Erling Haaland to officially surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal tally in the Premier League.
Erling Haaland has just officially passed Cristiano Ronaldo to become one of the most prolific scorers in Premier League history.
With a brace against West Ham, the Norwegian striker has increased his total league goals to 104, one more than Ronaldo’s 103 goals for Manchester United. Notably, the star born in 2000 achieved this milestone in just 114 matches, while the Portuguese legend needed 236 games.
Previously, Haaland had reached 100 Premier League goals in the match against Fulham at Craven Cottage. After that game, he didn’t score in Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Sunderland, but quickly bounced back with a brace against Crystal Palace in the 16th round of the Premier League on December 14, bringing his total to 102 goals.
His impressive scoring form has led Haaland to break multiple Premier League records. The 2000-born forward is currently the fastest player to reach both 50 and 100 goals in the league’s history.
In the long run, Haaland’s major target is the record of 260 goals held by legend Alan Shearer. At his current scoring pace, the Manchester City striker appears fully capable of challenging and even surpassing this great milestone in the future.
Returning to the match events, Haaland punished West Ham’s defensive lapse early on in the 5th minute with two quick shots, forcing goalkeeper Areola to concede. Manchester City kept applying intense pressure, and Haaland made another impact by assisting Tijjani Reijnders to double the lead in the 48th minute.
In the second half, the game remained largely unchanged as Pep Guardiola’s side maintained full control. In the 69th minute, capitalizing on a West Ham defender’s mistake, Haaland easily tapped in an empty net to complete his brace and seal a 3-0 victory for the Etihad hosts.
This result temporarily lifts the Manchester City team to the top of the Premier League table, one point ahead of Arsenal, although they have played one more match than their rivals.
