Real Madrid has officially lost one of FIFA's major trophies, but it remains relatively unknown.
Real Madrid once claimed the championship UEFA Champions League 2023/24 after a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium (London). Goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinícius Jr secured a convincing win for Los Blancos in the final.
By winning the Champions League, Real Madrid earned the right to compete in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, a tournament that brings together club champions from six continental federations: AFC Champions League Elite, CAF Champions League, CONCACAF Champions Cup, Copa Libertadores, OFC Champions League, and UEFA Champions League.
In December 2024, the inaugural Intercontinental Cup was held in Qatar, where Real Madrid defeated Mexican side Pachuca 3-0 in the final to claim the trophy.
However, in the current season, Real Madrid is absent from this competition as they failed to defend their Champions League title in 2024/25. This means they will no longer be the reigning Intercontinental Cup champions.
Instead, the championship has officially been claimed by PSG, after the Parisian club secured a thrilling victory over Flamengo on the morning of December 17. Under coach Luis Enrique, PSG drew 1-1 with the Brazilian team after 120 minutes at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium (Qatar), then won 2-1 in the penalty shootout.
The Paris team opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a calm finish from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. In the second half, Flamengo fought back strongly and equalized with a precise penalty kick by Jorginho in the 62nd minute. Both teams battled intensely for the remainder of the match and extra time, but neither could capitalize on further chances.
During the shootout, goalkeeper Matvey Safonov shone brilliantly by saving 4 out of 5 Flamengo shots, directly securing PSG’s sixth major trophy in 2025, concluding a historic season.
