The Opta supercomputer has offered its analysis and predictions for the upcoming match between Tottenham and Liverpool in the Premier League's 17th round.
Both Tottenham and Liverpool have experienced poor runs recently, which only adds more intensity to their upcoming clash in London.
Although playing at home, Tottenham is unexpectedly rated lower than the Merseyside team. Specifically, according to the supercomputer's prediction Opta, Liverpool is estimated to have a 42.3% chance of securing all three points. This percentage is about 10% higher than Tottenham’s winning probability, which stands at 32.3%, while a draw scenario accounts for 25.4%.
However, this matchup has the closest win-loss probability between the two teams in this Premier League round, suggesting a highly tense and unpredictable game.
Additionally, The Kop enjoys full support from historical data heading into the upcoming match.
According to statistics from Opta, Tottenham has won only 2 out of their last 25 Premier League encounters with Liverpool, losing 17 times. Both rare victories occurred at home, in October 2017 with a 4-1 result and in September 2023 with a 2-1 win.
Notably, in the most recent match mentioned, Tottenham benefited from several controversial moments such as Luis Diaz’s goal for Liverpool being wrongly disallowed, red cards for Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota, before Joel Matip’s own goal in stoppage time secured a win for the "Spurs".
In the two Premier League meetings last season, Liverpool scored a total of 11 goals and made 49 shots, winning decisively 6-3 and 5-1 against Tottenham’s vulnerable defense.
Liverpool has gradually regained fans’ confidence with two consecutive wins across all competitions. However, the consistent form The Kop showed throughout last season has yet to be replicated by Arne Slot and his squad, especially given the disappointing run so far this season.
Liverpool’s attack has been significantly upgraded with the addition of the trio Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike, yet none have lived up to expectations relative to their enormous transfer fees.
Meanwhile, Thomas Frank has faced difficulties during his first six months managing Tottenham. The "Spurs" have lost their status as giant killers, suffering several disappointing results and multiple defeats to teams considered weaker.
This has put the Danish coach’s future in serious doubt, especially since Tottenham is still competing in the UEFA Champions League. Without a favorable result against Liverpool, the possibility of the former Brentford manager being dismissed is very real.
The match between Tottenham and Liverpool is scheduled to take place at 00:30 early morning on December 21.
