PSG completed a historic sextuple following an extraordinary performance by their backup goalkeeper.

PSG claimed the Intercontinental Cup by overcoming Copa Libertadores champions Flamengo in a penalty shootout. Notably, goalkeeper Matvei Safonov saved four shots from the opposition.

The "unreal" performance of PSG’s backup goalkeeper

The match between Champions League winners PSG and Copa Libertadores champions Flamengo at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium (Qatar) unfolded exactly as expected: tense, thrilling, and decided in the final moments.

PSG started more energetically and even scored against Flamengo in the 9th minute. However, Fabian Ruiz’s goal was overturned by VAR because the ball had gone out of bounds earlier. Nevertheless, the European side didn’t wait long to celebrate officially. In the 38th minute, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck accurately to open the scoring, confirming PSG’s dominance.

In the second half, Flamengo demonstrated the grit of South American champions by steadfastly defending and waiting for an opening. Their chance came in the 62nd minute when a PSG defender committed a foul inside the penalty area, allowing Jorginho to level the score 1-1 from the penalty spot.
