Manchester United lost 3-1 at home to Brighton for the third time in a row, with boss Ruben Amorim admitting after the game that it could indeed be the worst team in 147-year history. The stats back up this assessment, with United losing six of their first 12 home games for the first time since 1893/94, when they were still known as Newton Heath.
Manchester United have performed well against Liverpool and Arsenal in the last few games, beating Southampton at home in the last round, and Diogu Darlow has returned from the ban this time, but the big problem for the Red Devils is that if you think they can't do it, they will play a few games, and if the fans think they can, the team will be revealed.
Before the game, Old Trafford took to the occasion to remember the deceased legendary goalscorer Dennis Law. Dennis Law's team-mates Paddy Creland, Alex Stepney and Brian Kidd, as well as his compatriot friend Ferguill, gathered in the centre circle for a pre-race tribute. With tears in the eyes of the crowd, this sadness will continue throughout the game, and then the reason is that Manchester United played too badly!
From the start, Andre Onana pounced on Brighton's cross from the right to Welbeck, and although the ball bounced high, the United goalkeeper had already told the whole audience: I'm going to start making trouble in this game! Before leaving the pitch, Ferguson embraced Welbeck, the former Reds Academy striker was applauded by the Theatre of Dreams crowd when he was substituted, but he showed no mercy in the game, with "Black Bey" already scoring six goals against his former club.
Brighton fans thought he had scored the seventh goal in the fifth minute and they chanted Welbeck's name, but it was Jankuba Minter who scored the goal when he met Japanese winger Kaoru Mikasa's brilliant cross and slotted past Onana to put United 1-0 down to Brighton. United have conceded in three of their last five home games in which they have conceded in the opening five minutes.
Perhaps the two players who qualified for the game were Amad Diallo and Zirkze, who combined to create an equaliser. Ahmad made a steal in front, Zirkze was hugged and fell to the ground in the penalty area, and the referee hesitated and still awarded a penalty.
Bruno Fernandes converted the penalty home to level the score 1-1. Sadly, the supporters who were expecting the Reds to put on a comeback again were soon brought back to reality. Manchester United's attacking strength was weak, and Fernandes's penalty was the only shot on target in the whole team of the game......
Even Ahmad, who scored a hat-trick against Southampton, was not a great scorer, and he went solo after being ruled offside, trying to pass the goalkeeper and missing a chance to shoot.
Manchester United's defensive problems are also serious, and Onana, who was once highly regarded as a "revolutionary goalkeeper", has now become a "deadly" goalkeeper. In the first half, he faced the opposition's pressing and had to kick the ball out of the sideline, and the function of a goalkeeper with the ball was not reflected in the slightest.
United could have been down just before half-time when they missed a return pass at the back, but Darlow was able to block Welbeck's last-minute shot and the two teams returned to the dressing room to a 1-1 draw.
Brighton warned again in the second half when their set-piece created chaos in the box and Joao Pedro fired into the net from Onana, but the VAR video assistant referee ruled that Van Heck had fouled Dalow and the goal was disallowed, and the Reds escaped again.
Unfortunately, United did not learn any lesson, and soon after, Darlow did not close to Minte, who crossed with his left foot from the right, Onana did not come out to receive the ball, and Mazraoui at the back post was poked into the net by Kaoru Mikasa, and United fell behind again 1-2.
Amorim made a substitution in hopes of salvaging the defeat, but all hope came to naught before Onana's low-level mistake. Brighton's unthreatening cross from the right flank, Onana fell to the ground to save but came out of his hands, and the ball fell to the feet of Giorginio Rutte, 1-3, and the suspense of the game ended. This mistake may prove why Onana was reluctant to leave the six-yard box to receive the ball because he was not good at it.
For the next few minutes, Onana stood outside the box, probably to clear his mind and away from the fans who were taunting him behind him. One can understand why Amorim is rumoured to want a new goalkeeper, Onana is not the ball-keeping goalkeeper he is advertised to be, and like David De Gea, he likes to stick to the goal-line and make far less saves.
In the end, Manchester United suffered a 1-3 defeat for the fourth time in their last five home games, with Old Trafford fans leaving the stadium early and Brighton fans chanting: "We thought you were shit, but we didn't think you were shit!"
Manchester United boss Amorim admitted after the game that he could be the worst team in the club's 100-year history. 'We've only won two of our 10 Premier League games and I know, imagine what it's like to be a Manchester United fan. Imagine what that means to me. The new coach has lost more games than the previous one, and I know that perfectly. I'm not going to change anyway, I'm sure we can succeed but the team needs to get through difficult moments. I'm not naïve, we need to survive first and foremost. We're probably the worst team in Manchester United's history, and I know we want the headlines, but I'm saying that because we have to admit the facts and make changes. And you guys, you can get the headlines."
Manchester United are currently 13th in the Premier League with a goal difference of -5 and have lost 10 of their 22 league games. Last season, Ten Hag led the team to a single eighth-place finish, their worst result in 34 years. After Amorim replaced Ten Hag in November, United have won just five of their 15 games and lost seven.
"It's hard to explain," Amorim said, "and we have to admit it, not avoid it." Everyone here is underperforming, no matter what the situation is. We didn't perform well and had to accept that. It's unacceptable for any Premier League club to lose so many games, let alone Manchester United. So it's a really tough time, but we have to continue, we have to continue, there's no other way. We need to endure the pain and keep trying."
Amorim said: 'Our players are really nervous and anxious. When you walk into the pitch, you think about the last games and if I can feel it, the players feel a lot. The only way is to keep doing the same thing and win the game."
In previous good performances for Manchester United, Amorim cautioned fans not to expect too much, as the rest of the season will be a rollercoaster of ups and downs. He's right, because the problem with the Red Devils is that they just don't have enough quality and a lot of players don't play at the level of the top clubs, and it's not something that can be changed by simply improving their mental strength. What's even more terrifying is that after Manchester City's setback, they spent £200 million in reinforcements in the winter window, and Manchester United has not made any moves so far.
