It is widely known that Manchester United plans to sign a new midfielder next year, so rumors have been constant. According to English media, after observing the development of Mbemo, Cunha, and Sheshko, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS management team firmly believes that signing a Premier League player is the ideal choice, unless players from other leagues are as cheap as Sena Ramens.

Two new Premier League players have been added to the list of rumored candidates, which already includes Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Lallana, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. The new names are Wolves’ João Gomes and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott.
Brazilian international João Gomes is not new to Manchester United transfer links; the club first showed interest in 2022 when he was still at Flamengo. In 2024, having joined Wolves, Gomes reappeared in Red Devils’ rumors after stepping in for Casemiro in the Brazil national team.
Manchester United ultimately chose Ugarte, but unfortunately, the Uruguayan international failed to perform as expected, forcing the club to look for midfield reinforcements again. If the Red Devils sign Gomes next summer, the transfer fee could be as low as £30 million, especially with Wolves likely facing relegation from the Premier League.
However, the winter window situation is different. Wolves have informed incoming coach Rob Edwards that they will not sell any top players in January, which likely rules out Gomes joining Manchester United early. If United insist on a winter move, Wolves may demand double the price — around £60 million.
This fee is similar to Cunha’s summer transfer price, and Cunha is eager to reunite with 24-year-old Gomes, as the two have been close friends both at Wolves and with the Brazil national team. When Cunha left Molineux Stadium in the summer window, he even gave Gomes a Rolex watch as a farewell gift.

Transfer expert Ben Jacobs said, “I don’t think Gomes will have any transfer opportunities mid-season because Wolves need to support their new head coach Rob Edwards. The team can’t afford to lose more players; if there is a mass exodus mid-season, including Gomes and Jørgen Strand Larsen, Wolves will face huge difficulties.”
Gomes is also unlikely to leave while the team is at the bottom of the table. Although his performances this season haven’t been the best, he has worked hard and repeatedly called on fans to support the team, earning their respect.
If Gomes eventually joins Manchester United, he will likely avoid describing his “childhood dream,” since he has publicly stated that his dream club was Liverpool. In 2022, he told ESPN he was eager to play for Liverpool but ended up joining Wolves instead. Gomes also said, “Playing in the Champions League is the biggest dream of my football career.”
Brazil’s Flamengo is reportedly very supportive of Manchester United signing Gomes because they secured a 10% resale clause when selling him, plus an additional 4% bonus through FIFA’s training compensation system.
Bournemouth’s Scott is genuinely a new name in Manchester United rumors. The 22-year-old English midfielder was recently called up to the England national team by Tuchel. Scott has played all 11 Premier League matches for Bournemouth this season, starting 10 of them, meeting Amrabat’s criteria for midfielders with strong athleticism. Moreover, Scott’s stepsister Maya Le Tissier plays for Manchester United Women, and both have been selected for the England squad.

Scott joined Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023 for £25 million. Premier League transfer expert Graeme Bailey said, “Scott is gradually emerging as a standout player, and Manchester United knows his talent well. I’ve heard they were interested when he was still at Bristol City, and now he’s developing into a highly dominant player. We know many midfielders are linked with Manchester United, but Scott is one to watch; he could join several clubs, including United.”
