Liverpool’s key player, Federico Chiesa, has continued to say “no” to the Italy squad by turning down coach Gennaro Gattuso’s summons once more.
Italy is set to play two matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Norway. Coach Gattuso is highly determined for these games, having summoned top stars, but a crucial player for Italy, Federico Chiesa, has withdrawn from the squad this time. This marks the fourth time the winger has pulled out of the Azzurri’s call-ups since EURO 2024.
In the pre-match press conference, Coach Gattuso admitted he has contacted Chiesa multiple times but respects the player’s decision:
“I speak with him regularly. We must respect everyone’s personal decisions and issues. I fully understand what has been discussed between Chiesa and me, and I cannot disclose more,” the 47-year-old coach shared.
Gattuso also confirmed this isn’t the first time Chiesa has refused to join the national team. He added:
“This is the fourth or fifth time I’ve had to explain this matter. He told me he’s not at 100% fitness yet and wants to return only when fully ready. I must respect that.”
Earlier, in September, Chiesa also withdrew from the Italy squad for similar reasons, stating “he did not feel ready physically or mentally” to compete internationally.
Since joining Liverpool in the summer 2024 transfer window, Federico Chiesa has yet to secure a regular spot under Coach Arne Slot. So far, he has appeared in eight Premier League matches and twice in the Champions League, all as a substitute.
Although not seriously injured, Chiesa is reportedly still recovering his best physical condition after a prolonged injury period at Juventus. Staying in Merseyside during the national team break is seen as an opportunity for the 27-year-old to continue fitness training and fight for a starting position at Liverpool.
Chiesa’s absence poses a big challenge for Coach Gattuso in attack, especially as Italy needs his form and experience to secure a World Cup spot after missing out in the last two editions (2018 and 2022). However, Gattuso stated he will not pressure the player: “I want players to perform with the best spirit and fitness. When Chiesa is ready, the national team door is always open for him.”
