Manchester United is counting on Aoki to win the Golden Boot and secure a high-value transfer! A potential €40 million split next summer, with details of the clauses revealed.

Marseille forward Mason Greenwood continues his impressive goal-scoring streak this season with 8 goals, placing him second only to Strasbourg’s Joaquin Panichelli on the scorer charts, giving him a shot at the league’s Golden Boot once more. Last season, he tied as top scorer alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé.

Manchester United’s transfer deal for Aoki last year contained a lucrative clause for a share of any future resale profits. Should he leave Marseille in the future, United stands to earn a substantial sum. The initial transfer fee United received was £26.6 million, including some performance-related bonuses. After Marseille qualified for the Champions League, the club also secured an additional bonus payment.

The club has never disclosed the exact amount of the resale clause, but it is reportedly quite large. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester United could receive half of the transfer fee! "United already received about €25 million when selling Greenwood, but with a 50% resale clause, the club hopes to gain even more!" Romano stated. "If Aoki is sold again in the future, United will get half of the transfer fee, effectively controlling 50% of the player’s economic rights. If Marseille decides to sell, United’s profit share will be greater."

Romano mentioned that clubs tried to sign Greenwood this summer but were turned down by Marseille. "During the summer transfer window, several clubs were ready to pay a high price for Greenwood, but Marseille refused, saying: 'No, he will stay; he is too important to sell.' This decision was made collectively by club president Pablo Longoria, director Mehdi Benatia, and coach Roberto De Zerbi, who all showed ambition and see Greenwood as a key player for the team."

Recently, rumors have linked Premier League clubs Tottenham and West Ham with interest in Greenwood, and there are even reports that Manchester United wants to buy him back. However, due to Aoki’s controversial history in England, it is unlikely he will return to play in the Premier League; a move back to La Liga or joining French giants Paris Saint-Germain seems more probable.

However, Manchester United’s hefty resale clause might affect Marseille’s willingness to sell. They will demand a higher price, or else they won’t agree to the transfer, since after splitting 50% of the fee, the Ligue 1 club’s profit margin would be quite limited.

Assuming Aoki transfers for €80 million, the Red Devils would take €40 million. After deducting the €25 million acquisition cost, Marseille’s net gain would be only €15 million... Therefore, they are reluctant to sell and would rather keep him for their own use.

Manchester United, of course, has a completely opposite stance. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS management team hopes that the transfers of Greenwood and Rashford will significantly improve the club’s financial statements, as both are academy graduates and all transfer income counts as pure profit.

In contrast, although Napoli is expected to pay a €45 million buyout clause for Højlund, United spent €80 million to sign him, meaning the deal is still at a loss. "Højlund no longer feels like a loaned player from United; he sees himself 100% as a Napoli player, and the club fully intends to make the transfer permanent," Romano said.

Romano added: "If Greenwood leaves in the future, Manchester United will have a 50% resale clause, which means more funds will flow in. This could be crucial for complying with Financial Fair Play regulations and for United’s future transfer plans."
