FIFA delivers a special message celebrating Indonesia's first-ever win in a World Cup event.
The U17 Indonesia team has just made history by helping Indonesian football claim its first victory in a World Cup competition. Coach Nova Arianto’s squad won 2-1 against Honduras in the final group stage match and now await the chance to advance to the round of 32 as one of the eight best third-placed teams out of twelve.
Indonesian football has only participated twice in World Cup tournaments, both at the U17 level. Previously, in 2023, U17 Indonesia hosted the U17 World Cup but was eliminated in the group stage after two draws and one loss. Following this historic milestone, FIFA extended congratulations to Indonesia.
The official FIFA Facebook page stated: "History made for Indonesia. Indonesia’s win at the U17 World Cup marks their first-ever victory at any World Cup!".
U17 Indonesia also finished the group stage of the 2025 U17 World Cup in third place in Group H. Mathew Baker and his teammates earned three points from three matches. Whether U17 Indonesia will qualify for the last 32 in the 2025 U17 World Cup as one of the top third-placed teams remains to be seen. The eight best third-placed teams from the groups qualify for this year’s tournament.
U17 Indonesia is still waiting for the final results of the last matches in Groups I, J, K, and L of the 2025 U17 World Cup, scheduled for Tuesday, November 11, 2025. The Garuda Muda’s chance to qualify remains, albeit quite narrow.
From 2025 to 2029, FIFA has decided to hold the U17 World Cup annually, with Qatar remaining the host nation, greatly increasing opportunities for young players. Corresponding with these U17 World Cups, the Asian U17 Championship qualifiers and finals will also be held annually. With 48 teams participating, Asia is guaranteed 8 spots if teams advance past the group stage.
