Manchester United has faced issues at left-back this season, with neither Diogo Dalot nor Tyrell Malacia delivering satisfying performances. However, Ruben Amourin actually has no shortage of left-backs, as the squad has so many that 18-year-old Harry Amass had to be loaned to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday; otherwise, he might not even get minutes in the reserves.

In Manchester United’s first team, after Luke Shaw shifted to center-back, Dalot and Malacia have alternated as left wing-backs in the 3-4-3 formation. The 18-year-old Paraguayan Diego León, who joined in the summer for $7 million, is the main left-back for the Red Devils’ under-21 squad. Harry Amass, once hailed as the "new Luke Shaw," has established himself in the Championship.
Statistics show that Amass started all 11 Championship matches for Sheffield Wednesday. Despite the club facing near bankruptcy, the young Manchester United player has performed well. Although Wednesday lost 1-3 to Southampton over the weekend, the match was significant for Amass personally, as he scored his first professional senior goal.
After receiving the ball in midfield, Amass broke through a double team and fired a left-footed long-range shot into the net just outside the box. He had no time to celebrate and immediately returned to midfield, urging his team to continue fighting back from behind. At that moment, the Owls were only trailing 1-2, but unfortunately, they failed to score again and conceded another goal, losing decisively. Currently, the team sits at the bottom with -4 points, having originally earned 6 points but was deducted 10.

In this match, Amass completed 42 of 47 passes successfully and made 3 tackles, all successful. Despite conceding 3 goals, he managed 4 clearances and recovered possession 7 times. Some Manchester United fans hope to recall this homegrown left-back from Watford, but there is no need for Amourin to do so because Amass’s loan contract expires on January 5th.
However, it is expected that Sheffield Wednesday will request an extension of the loan, which Manchester United is likely to approve. The Red Devils did not charge any loan fee, aiming to give Amass more first-team experience. Considering Sheffield Wednesday’s financial difficulties, this arrangement is ideal.
Sheffield Wednesday’s head coach Henrik Pedersen said: "I spoke with transfer director Kevin Beedle, and today they went to Manchester to discuss the future of this deal with Manchester United. I believe we will revisit Harry’s situation and possibilities for next year in the next two to three weeks."

The Sheffield Wednesday coach believes that Manchester United players loaned to his club have made great progress both technically and professionally, and he hopes Amass can stay until the end of the season. "The young man who just joined Sheffield Wednesday is completely different from the player on the pitch today; his style of play has changed dramatically," Pedersen said. "His improvement is remarkable. Young players like Harry are full of energy, but the Championship is very demanding with three games a week, which is tough. Yet he has persevered. Last week against West Brom, Norwich, and Southampton, he proved he can compete with, and even dominate, former Premier League teams. I think he has grown a lot, gained deeper self-awareness, and knows what to do and avoid."
Coach Pedersen continued: "He now manages his emotions better and has become more stable. I see his physical condition improving — he runs more, sprints more frequently, accelerates better, and pauses less during matches. He performs better in all phases of the game. I really like him; he’s a good kid, a good player, and eager to learn. We are very happy to have him at Sheffield Wednesday."
Amourin has no plans to recall Amass mid-season because among Manchester United’s three left-backs, Malacia and León were his own signings, and Dalot is his relative and part of the six-person locker room leadership team. The 40-year-old Portuguese coach will not bench these players to use Amass. Moreover, if recalling Amass means only playing as a substitute, it’s better for him to continue developing at Sheffield Wednesday.

Amass made his Manchester United first-team debut last season and is under contract with the club until June 2027. The Red Devils will decide his future after this season. If Amourin continues to bring in left-backs, this young player who joined in 2023 may eventually leave Old Trafford for good.
