Lionel Messi has established many unique records following his outstanding performance in Inter Miami's win against Nashville.
Lionel Messi continued to deliver a brilliant display in Inter Miami colors, playing a key role in helping the team defeat Nashville to secure a spot in the MLS Cup quarterfinals.
Not only did the Argentine superstar score twice, but he also assisted Tadeo Allende. This achievement marks Messi's entry into football history by reaching 400 career assists. Currently, El Pulga is just four assists behind the late legend Ferenc Puskas to become the greatest assist provider of all time.
Besides the great milestone above, Messi also broke several other impressive records in his dazzling display against Nashville.
With two goals scored, Messi has reached 894 goals across his entire career, making him the fastest player in football history to achieve this feat.
This is also the 13th time in his career he has contributed over 60 goals for club and country within a calendar year. As of 2025, Messi has been involved in 65 goal contributions, with his best year being 2012 with 113 contributions.
Additionally, Messi surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo to become the player with the most non-penalty goals in history, scoring 782 goals compared to Ronaldo’s 773 goals although Ronaldo has played 163 more matches than Messi.
Following this win, Inter Miami’s number 10 has raised his MLS goal tally to 56, and this number is likely to rise quickly as his team advances to the MLS Cup quarterfinals.
Despite being 38 years old and having left top-tier European football, Messi continues to dominate in the U.S. with exceptional performances. After helping Inter Miami claim major titles like the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters' Shield, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner aims to win the MLS Cup for the first time, solidifying his status as a living legend still eager to face challenges in his "twilight years."
In the MLS Cup quarterfinals, Messi and his Inter Miami teammates will face their familiar rival Cincinnati FC.
