Jurgen Klopp expressed touching remarks towards his peer Pep Guardiola, as the Man City coach is about to reach his 1000th game as a manager.
Tonight (November 9, Vietnam time), Man City will host Liverpool at Etihad Stadium in the 11th round of the Premier League. Notably, this match coincides with an important milestone for Pep Guardiola, as the Spanish tactician marks his 1000th match as a football manager since 2007.
Under Pep Guardiola’s leadership, Man City has frequently competed against Klopp’s Liverpool during their peak rivalry in England. Previously, they also faced each other while managing Bayern Munich and Dortmund in the Bundesliga between 2013 and 2015.
However, it is in the Premier League that these two managers have forged a respectful rivalry, often battling for the championship. Ahead of the upcoming clash, Sky Sports invited Klopp to send his congratulations to Guardiola before Liverpool’s away match led by Arne Slot.
The German manager shared moving words: "Pep, my friend, welcome to the 1000 club! It’s incredible that you still look so youthful having reached this extraordinary milestone. I don’t need to remind you that I hit this mark 81 matches earlier, but that’s probably the only time I got ahead of you.
But that’s alright, it’s all good. I’ve said it millions of times: It’s a pleasure and an honor to have faced you so many times in my career. These matches are always tough, but they’re also my favorites because you constantly inspire all of us.
Your understanding of football is amazing, almost unmatched. The passion you show every day is astonishing. So, congratulations on joining another legendary club, and here’s to the next 1000 matches.
Wishing you all the best, looking forward to seeing you soon, and hope you have a fantastic celebration. Maybe you’ll raise a glass of red wine to toast.”
Under Pep Guardiola, Man City has become a dominant force in the Premier League, known for their refined ball control and relentless pressing style. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool impresses with their energetic Gegenpressing philosophy and explosive counterattacks.
When these two teams meet, it’s usually an exciting and intense showdown that directly impacts the title race. Since Guardiola took charge of Man City in 2016 and Klopp started managing Liverpool in 2015, both clubs have alternated in dominating the Premier League and domestic cups.
During this period, Man City has won six Premier League titles, while Liverpool has claimed one league title along with FA Cups, League Cups, and the Champions League.
Currently, while Pep Guardiola continues his career at Etihad, Klopp has temporarily stepped away from coaching to take the role of Global Football Director at the Red Bull group.
Nonetheless, the rivalry between Man City and Liverpool remains intense, with Arne Slot having performed impressively in his first two encounters with Pep, promising a top-tier match in the upcoming fixture.
The match between Man City and Liverpool will take place at 11:30 PM tonight (November 9).
