Arsenal lost a victory in the 4th minute of stoppage time

Arsenal lost what seemed like a certain victory when Sunderland equalized 2-2 at the 90+4 minute mark in a dramatic match at the Stadium of Light.

Despite taking the lead 2-1 thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard, Mikel Arteta’s team couldn’t maintain the advantage as substitute Brian Brobbey scored in the final moments, forcing the Premier League leaders to settle for a draw.

Earlier, Sunderland, the surprising newly promoted side this season, scored first in the first half. From a free kick delivered into the penalty area, captain and center-back Dan Ballard, an Arsenal academy product, exploited a defensive mistake to beat goalkeeper David Raya, ending Arsenal’s eight-match clean sheet streak. This early goal unsettled Arsenal, especially with many key players like Martin Ødegaard, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Martinelli, and Gyökeres missing from the starting lineup.

After the break, the visitors mounted a strong comeback. In the 54th minute, Declan Rice stole the ball from Enzo Le Fée, initiating a quick counterattack involving Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino, before Saka scored a precise shot to equalize 1-1. Then in the 68th minute, Trossard increased the lead to 2-1 with a thunderous right-footed strike from outside the box, seemingly deciding the match.

However, in the intense stoppage time, Sunderland continuously sent balls into the penalty area. Then Brobbey, newly introduced by coach Régis Le Bris, executed a beautiful overhead kick amid the chaos to finalize the score at 2-2 in the 90+4 minute, igniting the stadium.

Coach Arteta did not hide his disappointment after the game: “We controlled the match and should have won. But when they launched all-out attacks, our defense was not strong enough. Nevertheless, credit must be given to Sunderland. They played with great spirit and discipline.”

With this result, Arsenal remain top of the table but their lead over Manchester City is cut to 7 points, while Chelsea also narrowed the gap to 6 after a win against Wolves. This is the first time since September that the Gunners conceded a goal, ending a 13-and-a-half-hour clean sheet streak—their best defensive record since 1903.
