Not perfect, Arsenal's critical weakness exposed

Paul Merson believes he has found Arsenal’s “Achilles' heel,” arguing that the 5-4-1 setup is the best tactic to challenge Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Arsenal are thriving this season with an almost flawless form. After 16 matches across all competitions, Mikel Arteta’s side has won 14 games and conceded only 3 goals, an impressive defensive record in modern football.

It’s no surprise that experts have started to regard the Gunners as top contenders for the Premier League title. However, former star Paul Merson claims he has discovered the North London club’s “Achilles' heel.”

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson stated that there is a tactical approach capable of troubling Arsenal and even “paralyzing” Arteta’s style of play.

“If I were a coach, I would choose the 5-4-1 formation. It’s the most effective system against Arsenal right now; they operate like a well-oiled machine with many outstanding players who are not only hardworking but also highly skilled. Yet, this perfection makes them vulnerable when opponents set up a low block with five defenders.”Merson added.

Merson cited the example of Arsenal’s 0-1 loss to Liverpool, their only defeat this season. In that match, Liverpool used a back three and two deep wing-backs, suffocating the movement of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli. The goal came from a brilliant free-kick by Dominik Szoboszlai, but what caught Merson’s attention more was Arsenal’s near inability to create clear chances.

The former Arsenal midfielder believes that the 5-4-1 system or variations like 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 can limit Arteta’s team’s strength. With three center-backs covering the back and two full-backs dropping deep, the space between lines shrinks, reducing the effectiveness of Arsenal’s quick attacks and central combinations.

“Look at Sunderland or Manchester United. They both used this formation to contain Arsenal, making the game very tough for Arteta’s side,” Merson emphasized.

Paul Merson’s warning is worth Mikel Arteta’s consideration. In a long campaign, even small tactical details can cause Arsenal’s near-perfect machine to falter.
