Moving to Chelsea amid great hopes, Alejandro Garnacho continues to be criticized by ex-players for his selfish style, indecisiveness, and an arrogant demeanor on and off the field.
After leaving Manchester United to join Chelsea in the recent summer transfer window, Alejandro Garnacho has yet to prove himself worthy of a top Premier League club. Despite possessing speed, technique, and the ability to create breakthroughs, the 21-year-old Argentine is still seen by many former stars as “immature” in both mindset and playing style.
Former MU midfielder Lee Sharpe believes Garnacho’s biggest weakness lies in his decision-making: “He has excellent skills, speed, and impressive confidence. But in the final third, Garnacho often chooses the wrong moments to pass or shoot. That’s why he hasn’t reached the level required at clubs like Manchester United or Chelsea.”
Not only his professional skills but also Garnacho’s attitude has drawn disapproval from experts. He has been excluded from the Argentina squad for nearly a year, and former legend Oscar Ruggeri calls this “a consequence of his lack of humility.” Ruggeri bluntly stated: “He thinks he is above others, but that attitude only brings disadvantages. If he learns humility, Garnacho will soon return to the national team because his ability is genuinely very good.”
Even former defender Paul Parker, who once played for MU, criticized how Garnacho left Old Trafford: “He left disrespectfully. While at United, fans supported him even when he faced problems. But instead of being grateful, Garnacho acted arrogantly as if he were the next Ronaldo.”
Nevertheless, Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has offered necessary support for his player. After Garnacho’s goal in the 2-2 draw against Qarabağ in the Champions League, the Italian strategist said: “He is improving bit by bit. When he doesn’t succeed, people tend to forget that Garnacho is still very young and needs time.”
Currently, Garnacho is expected to play again this weekend when Chelsea hosts Wolves. Not being called up to the Argentina squad gives him extra time to train and an opportunity to prove he has what it takes to mature in the Blues’ colors.
