Leny Yoro: 'I have never regretted turning down Real Madrid'

The young French defender Leny Yoro affirms he completely stands by his decision to refuse Real Madrid in favor of signing with Manchester United, even though his debut season at Old Trafford was full of ups and downs.

Joining Manchester United from Lille in July 2024 for a fee of £59 million, Leny Yoro became the focal point of one of the biggest transfer battles in Europe between Real Madrid and the Red Devils.Many believed he took a risk by choosing a club undergoing rebuilding rather than the reigning Champions League champions. However, the 19-year-old defender remains firm in his choice.

From the start, Yoro trusted Manchester United’s long-term project under coach Erik ten Hag. But a serious left foot injury during pre-season sidelined him for four months. Upon his return, Ten Hag was dismissed after a poor run of nine matches, replaced by Ruben Amorim, which further limited Yoro’s playing opportunities. Nevertheless, the young player remains optimistic and confident about his future at Old Trafford.

“In a career, there are decisions you have to make,” Yoro shared in an interview at Carrington. “I received many offers, not only from Madrid or United but also from other clubs. In the end, I chose Manchester because I believed in their project, and I am very happy with that decision.”

Yoro’s first season unfolded amid a crisis at Manchester United. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League, the club’s worst modern-era finish, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. Still, the 19-year-old center-back maintained a strong mindset.

“I have never felt regret. I know sometimes you can have a bad season, but Manchester United is still a big club. You cannot doubt that,” he asserted.

Instead of opting for Real Madrid—where he could compete in the Champions League and fight for titles—Yoro decided to commit to Manchester United’s rebuilding process. He believes the arrival of coach Ruben Amorim will be a turning point to restore the club’s former glory.

“I knew the club’s plan clearly before signing. Of course, I didn’t expect the first season to be this tough, but that’s part of the journey. You have to trust the team, hold your head high, and work hard every day,” Yoro added.

Experts consider Yoro one of Europe’s most promising young center-backs, and his choice of Manchester United over Real Madrid reflects his ambition to become a leader for the new generation at Old Trafford. Despite a difficult start, the French defender has shown maturity and determination—qualities MU desperately needs during this rebuilding phase.

With this spirit, Yoro not only wants to prove his worth but also hopes to help Manchester United return to its peak. “I chose Manchester because I believe this is where I can become a better player, not only on the pitch but also in mindset. I have no regrets, never have,” he concluded.
