Missing from the FIFA The Best 2025 nominee list has led to an unwelcome milestone for Lionel Messi.
FIFA recently officially announced the nominees for The Best 2025. The list features standout stars from the 2024/25 season such as Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha, Lamine Yamal, Mohamed Salah,... promising an exciting competition.
However, one of the most notable absences is Lionel Messi. Despite delivering brilliant performances for Inter Miami, the Argentine superstar failed to secure a spot among the nominees.
This is the first time Messi has not been nominated since FIFA The Best was launched in 2016. The 1987-born star holds the record with three wins and a total of nine nominations.
El Pulga won the award in 2019, then again consecutively in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, he was the runner-up in 2016, 2017, and 2021, ranked third in 2020, and placed sixth in his most recent 2024 nomination.
This season, Messi scored 40 goals and provided 19 assists in 45 appearances for Inter Miami, aiming for his first MLS Cup since joining the U.S. club in 2023. These impressive stats highlight the disappointment, especially as he maintains top form at age 38.
Sharing the same fate as Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo is also absent from this year’s nominee list. The Portuguese star marks his fourth consecutive year missing this prestigious award.
Ronaldo won The Best twice, in the inaugural seasons of 2016 and 2017. He was runner-up twice in 2018 and 2020, and placed third in 2019.
The last time CR7 was nominated was in 2021, finishing seventh in the voting, and he has not appeared on the list since.
Nevertheless, both Messi and Ronaldo find some consolation by being included in the nominees for FIFA’s Best Male Attacking Player of the Year category. However, their chances of winning are slim given the presence of many other high-achieving stars.
