Manchester United has been paying the price for Dalot for quite some time now.

Regardless of whether the team wins or loses, Manchester United supporters are consistently let down by Diogo Dalot. Everything he attempts, be it ball control, passing, or crossing, falls short. The issue is that Patrik Dorgu, who replaces him on the left side, is equally underwhelming.

In any team employing a three-man defense, wing-backs hold a vital role. At Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United, the left flank stands out as the biggest weakness.

At the start of this season, Amorim entrusted the Dalot-Dorgu pair, both naturally full-backs. However, they failed to contribute in attack and frequently made defensive mistakes. Dorgu transferred to Old Trafford from Lecce for £25 million earlier this year. The Danish defender was expected to be the first-choice left wing-back but, aside from his strong tackling and speed, he often lacks focus and shows immature ball handling.

When Dorgu performed poorly, Amorim switched Dalot from right to left wing-back, hoping to eliminate that vulnerable spot opponents exploited. Although the Portuguese defender isn’t outstanding on the right wing-back, moving him to the opposite side turned out disastrous. This was most clearly shown in the recent 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, where Dalot’s sluggish reaction to a cross led to Savona’s goal. It was hardly surprising when the 26-year-old was substituted in the 68th minute.

The right wing-back position is somewhat reassuring thanks to Amad Diallo, who not only adapts well to Amorim’s requirements for the role but also scored a valuable equalizer that helped MU avoid defeat at City Ground.

Whether Dalot or Dorgu plays on the left wing, Manchester United fans remain disappointed.

However, Diallo faces the challenge of returning to Ivory Coast duty for AFCON 2025, set to take place from late December this year to early next year. This period coincides with MU’s most demanding fixture schedule, and Amorim will have to pray that Dalot and Dorgu don’t deliver further poor performances.

In the long term, MU must add at least one quality wing-back during the winter transfer window, especially on the left side. Coach Amorim may consider two options from La Liga: Nahuel Molina from Atletico Madrid and Jon Aramburu from Real Sociedad.

Molina was a key player for Atletico Madrid last season, scoring 1 goal and providing 3 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions under Diego Simeone. However, this season the Argentine defender has mostly been used as a substitute, with the recent Champions League 3-1 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise marking only his second start across all tournaments. Nevertheless, Molina’s capabilities have been proven over three years at Atletico, making him a potentially ideal solution for MU as he does not want to remain a long-term bench player at Wanda Metropolitano.

If Amorim’s squad needs a younger alternative, Real Sociedad’s Aramburu is a good candidate. The 23-year-old defender scored 1 goal and contributed 1 assist in 49 appearances last season, with impressive defensive statistics. However, Real Sociedad is not pressured to sell him at any cost, and the £52 million price tag is quite hefty.
