Lionel Messi has just given the clearest hint yet about his retirement plans.
Lionel Messi made a rare public appearance at the American Business Forum held in Miami on November 6th. Alongside the Argentine superstar, the event featured FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali.
Among the speakers, Messi was the only active professional athlete, and he revealed some insights about his retirement plans there.
Messi shared: “I have had a long career, and it is still ongoing… But lately, I have started to pay more attention to what is happening and what could be done in the future. Unfortunately, football has a limited lifespan, and at some point, your career must come to an end.”
The 38-year-old superstar previously expressed his desire to play at least until the next World Cup next summer, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, Messi recently extended his contract with Inter Miami until the end of the 2028 season, when he will turn 42.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner added: “I have begun thinking about what I can do after finishing my career. The business world is an area that excites and interests me. I want to learn and continue improving. Right now, I don’t know much; I am just starting my journey as an entrepreneur.”
Also at the event, Messi was presented the “key to the city of Miami” by Mayor Francis Suarez. He expressed deep gratitude to the city and its people for their warm welcome since his arrival in 2023.
Messi emotionally said: “Thank you, I feel truly honored. As I just said, my family and I have felt so much love, gratitude, and happiness living in this city. Receiving this special honor means a lot to me, thank you sincerely.”
