Crystal Palace is making efforts to move their Premier League matches to allow more time to prepare for the Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Arsenal, amid a packed schedule at the year's end that has caused significant strain on the squad.
Coach Oliver Glasner acknowledged that Crystal Palace has formally asked the Premier League organizers to shift the match against Leeds United from December 21 to December 20. This is because they face Leeds and Arsenal within just three days, creating serious difficulties for Palace’s preparation.
“We are trying to move the Leeds game to Friday (20/12). We haven’t received any response from the Premier League yet. If Arsenal’s match against Everton is rescheduled, then our situation should be treated similarly,” Glasner explained.
According to the plan, Crystal Palace will play as many as eight matches in December, including the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Mikel Arteta’s team on December 23 and the Conference League match against KuPS (Finland) on December 18. Competing simultaneously in three competitions is draining the players physically, while Arsenal maintains excellent form in both the Premier League and cup tournaments.
Arteta’s team currently shows impressive performance across all competitions, consistently defeating strong opponents and demonstrating superior strength in both tactics and squad depth. Their stability and control over games make Arsenal a formidable challenge for any team, and winning the Carabao Cup is definitely among the Gunners’ ambitions this season.
Glasner believes the current fixture congestion reflects poor planning by football authorities: “I think the EFL and Premier League didn’t address this issue before the season started. They will learn from this and come up with better solutions next year. We will be ready no matter how the schedule looks.”
Meanwhile, some Arsenal fans are unhappy that their team must play the Carabao Cup match against Palace just two days after an away game against Everton. One supporter commented: “This is absolutely ridiculous.” Another fan sarcastically remarked: “Both teams will probably have to field their C squads. It’s a complete farce.”
With overlapping fixtures and a strong opponent, can Crystal Palace pull off an upset against Arsenal in the upcoming encounter?
