At the U.S. Business Forum, Lionel Messi talked about his career path, the feelings surrounding his 2022 World Cup victory, and confirmed that he continues to savor every second on the field.
The Argentine star appeared in the role of keynote speaker at the U.S. Business Forum held on November 5, where Miami Mayor Francis Suarez presented him with the “key to the city” in recognition of his contributions and global influence. In front of thousands of attendees, Messi shared his journey from Rosario to Barcelona, Paris, and now Inter Miami, where he continues to play at 38 years old.
“Winning the World Cup is the ultimate achievement. After that, there is nothing more you can ask for. It’s hard to put into words the feeling of that moment,” Messi said, recalling the championship with Argentina in Qatar. “That feeling is like when my children were born. It is sacred, special, and beyond any words.”
He admitted that the World Cup title was the final piece to complete his career. “I was fortunate to achieve everything at the club level, both team and individual honors. That one title was missing, and once I won it, my career felt complete.”
Nevertheless, Messi emphasized that he has no plans to retire yet. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said he still wants to keep contributing and enjoy football every day. “I’m not worried or thinking about retirement. I just want to enjoy the present and cherish every moment because time flies.”
Messi continues to impress at Inter Miami with 29 goals and 19 assists this MLS season, just one goal shy of Carlos Vela’s record of 49. He recently signed a three-year contract extension lasting until 2028 and is aiming for a successful season with his American club.
When asked about his future and the possibility of playing in the 2026 World Cup, Messi smiled: “I don’t know what will happen. Right now, I just want to keep playing and enjoy it.”
