The Champions League no longer includes a group stage. Starting last season, the new system consists of an 8-match league phase; the top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16, teams ranked 9th to 24th compete in a two-legged playoff for the other eight round of 16 places, and those ranked 25th to 36th are eliminated, with no relegation to the Europa League.
The Premier League is now truly the top league, with six teams participating in the Champions League this season and showing strong performances. After four rounds, half of the top eight spots belong to Premier League clubs (4 teams), and all six rank within the top twelve.
