According to Fichajes, Chelsea has targeted Rafael Leao from AC Milan. The English club is reportedly ready to spend £105 million to sign the Portuguese winger.
The £105 million figure is substantial enough to make Rossoneri seriously consider releasing their key player, who has scored 4 goals and provided 1 assist in 6 games this season.
If this transfer happens, Chelsea will continue to invest heavily in the left wing position. However, unlike previous winger signings, Leao is viewed as an experienced player with match maturity and the ability to influence the game even under difficult circumstances.
During last season under Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceicao, Leao’s form somewhat plateaued. But since Massimiliano Allegri took over and after recovering from a calf injury in August, the Portuguese player has shown impressive performances. Coach Allegri once described Leao as a "genius" and positioned him centrally in his tactical framework, helping Milan compete strongly for the Serie A title this season.
Chelsea is ready to spend over £100 million to purchase Rafael Leao from AC Milan
Leao has been with AC Milan for more than six years and has played over 250 matches for the San Siro club. Therefore, it is quite possible he seeks a new challenge in the Premier League, especially given Chelsea's ambitious sporting project. Leao's dribbling, chance creation, and finishing abilities will help Chelsea strengthen their left-wing attack and provide more consistent quality output. His top-level experience may also support the development of younger teammates.
The final decision might depend on whether Garnacho or Gittens can convince Maresca during the rest of the season. If they cannot, Chelsea signing Leao will be just a matter of time.
Chelsea currently trails the Champions League qualification spots by just one point in the Premier League after their recent victory over Tottenham Hotspur. If they secure a full three points against Qarabag in tonight’s match, Enzo Maresca’s team could move into the top eight clubs in Europe this season.
Nevertheless, the early season results have not fully met initial expectations. This is mainly due to Chelsea spending a significant amount on forwards during the summer transfer window, but aside from Joao Pedro partially meeting expectations, most other attacking new signings have yet to make a significant impact.
In particular, Maresca’s wingers have struggled with form and consistency. Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens have had some notable moments at Stamford Bridge, but neither has secured a regular starting position. Given that the London club usually does not show patience beyond one or two seasons for new signings, the management has already planned to add a new winger next summer.
