On November 5, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) conducted the draw for the 2026 AFC Futsal Championship finals, placing Vietnam in Group B alongside Thailand, Kuwait, and Lebanon.
This group is seen as a reasonable challenge for coach Diego Giustozzi’s team, with the goal of reaching the quarterfinals within reach. Nevertheless, Thailand’s presence — a top team in Asia — will make Vietnam’s path far from easy.
Thailand is Vietnam’s primary rival in Southeast Asia and also counts among Asia’s strongest teams. They have claimed the regional championship seven times, frequently reached the Asian Futsal semifinals, and regularly qualified for the Futsal World Cup, most recently in 2021. Under coach Carlos Cesar’s leadership, Thailand maintains a technical playing style, high pressing, and quick ball transitions. Their squad still includes many experienced key players like Jetsada Chudech and Muhammad Osamanmusa, promising to be Vietnam’s biggest challenge in the group stage.
