The Champions League 2025/26 clash between Olympiacos Piraeus and PSV Eindhoven concluded with an exciting 1-1 tie, as Ricardo Pepi was substituted on and netted a last-minute equalizer.
After two tough away defeats to Arsenal and Barcelona, Olympiacos returned home determined to secure their first group stage victory. The Greek side started energetically, pressing aggressively and were soon rewarded.
In the 17th minute, Gelson Martins executed a skillful dribble before unleashing a powerful shot from outside the box, sending the ball into the top corner and putting Olympiacos ahead 1-0. His individual brilliance electrified the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium.
Following the goal, José Luis Mendilibar’s team maintained control of the game. Podence and El Kaabi consistently pressured PSV’s defense, while Martins nearly scored a second when his shot hit the crossbar in the 62nd minute. Statistics show Olympiacos took 15 shots, but only one found the net.
PSV entered the match in strong form after a 6-2 win over Napoli previously, yet struggled to break down the well-organized home defense. Throughout 90 minutes, the Dutch side managed just one shot on target, which turned out to be a priceless goal.
Coach Peter Bosz made several tactical changes in the second half, bringing on Esmir Bajraktarevic, Couhaib Driouech, and finally Ricardo Pepi to refresh the attack. These substitutions paid off at the very last moment.
At 90+5 minutes, amid chaos in front of the goal, Ricardo Pepi was perfectly positioned to receive the rebound and fired a precise low shot into the right corner, leveling the score at 1-1. Goalkeeper Tzolakis dived fully but couldn’t prevent the equalizer.
Olympiacos players collapsed after the final whistle, having come so close to their first Champions League win this season, only to lose it due to a momentary lapse in concentration.
The 1-1 draw leaves Olympiacos near the bottom of the group with just 2 points from 4 matches, while PSV holds 5 points, maintaining a spot in the top 2 and still with a chance to advance. Despite an unimpressive performance, the Dutch side’s resilience showed at the crucial moment, making Ricardo Pepi the match hero.
For Olympiacos, regret filled the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium. They played excellently for almost the entire match, creating many clear chances but failed to finish off their opponent when the opportunity arose.
