The teenage player Max Dowman made headlines across Europe by becoming the youngest participant in Champions League history in Arsenal’s win against Slavia Prague.
At 15 years and 308 days old, Dowman officially broke the five-year record previously held by Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko, marking a historic milestone for both Arsenal and English football.
In the 72nd minute against Slavia Prague, coach Mikel Arteta brought Max Dowman onto the field with Arsenal leading 3-0. Dowman entered to cheers from the Emirates crowd, showing remarkable composure and confidence for a 15-year-old. Another academy player, Andre Harriman-Annous, was also given a chance by Arteta later, highlighting Arsenal’s strong trust in their Hale End academy youth.
Just weeks earlier, Dowman was still competing in the UEFA Youth League for Arsenal’s U19s, impressing with two assists against Atletico Madrid. The 2025/26 season has seen this 2009-born player make rapid progress, achieving numerous historic milestones.
Dowman became Arsenal’s second youngest player to appear in the Premier League, only behind Ethan Nwaneri. He also holds the record as the youngest starter for the “Gunners,” having played in the Carabao Cup against Brighton at 15 years and 302 days.
These achievements prove that Dowman is not just a fleeting phenomenon but a genuine gem of the Hale End academy, which has produced stars like Saka, Smith Rowe, and Nwaneri. Arsenal fans even refer to this young talent as the club’s "once in a century" prodigy.
Coach Mikel Arteta expressed his pride when talking about his player. “He came on, took control of the ball, dribbled past opponents, and earned a free kick — that’s character and courage. These qualities cannot be taught.” Arteta shared these words after the match.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal quickly signed Dowman to a two-year scholarship and plan to offer him a professional contract as soon as he turns 17 in 2026. The player’s family is reportedly very pleased with the club’s development plan. “He truly loves Arsenal and has been a fan since he was young. His family also trusts our project. We hope Dowman will stay here for many years to come,” Arteta added.
The 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague means Arsenal have won all four group stage matches in the Champions League, reinforcing their status as top contenders for the title. In the Premier League, the “Gunners” are also six points ahead of Manchester City, showcasing impressive form and strong ambition in the title race.
At just 15, Max Dowman not only set a record but also opened a new chapter for Arsenal’s golden generation, where the “Hale End kids” are rewriting the story of the London club’s revival.
