Following the 1-2 loss against Bayern Munich at Parc des Princes, Coach Luis Enrique acknowledged that the opponents were dominant and rightly deserved an extra goal if they had made better use of PSG’s errors.
Paris Saint-Germain had a night to forget at Parc des Princes when they lost 1-2 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stage. This marked their first defeat in European competition this season and their second loss across all competitions. Facing an efficient opponent’s attack, PSG showed too many mistakes, particularly in the first half — a period Luis Enrique described as “when the team gifted Bayern goals.”
In the post-match press conference, the Spanish coach shared: “Bayern was stronger in the 11 versus 11 situation. We gave them gifts in the first half. They deserved to score another goal.” He admitted that his team got caught up in Bayern’s style, lacked focus in crucial moments, and made many unnecessary errors.
PSG’s two early goals conceded resulted from clumsy defensive plays, allowing Luis Diaz to take advantage and score twice before being sent off for a harsh tackle on Hakimi. Despite having a numerical advantage in the second half, PSG couldn’t turn the game around, only managing a consolation goal from Joao Neves, which wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
Luis Enrique believed the result accurately reflected the match dynamics: “In the first half, they outperformed us. They created more chances, while we made significant mistakes. When you gift your opponents like that, losing is natural; we could even have conceded more.”
PSG also suffered a major blow with Ousmane Dembele getting injured and leaving the pitch in the 25th minute, while Hakimi was forced off just before halftime. Regarding the squad situation, Enrique stated: “Ousmane’s injury isn’t related to a previous one. This is football; contact is unavoidable. But indeed, we are enduring a very demanding schedule.”
The capital club currently faces a serious injury crisis with key players like Dembele, Bradley Barcola, Joao Neves, Fabian Ruiz, and Desire Doue all sidelined. Still, Enrique refused to use this as an excuse for the loss: “I’m not looking for excuses. It’s our responsibility to perform better. We are still improving and will regain form.”
In the second half, PSG significantly improved their ball control but still lacked creativity in the final third. The absence of attacking stars left the team unable to break through Bayern’s solid defense. Enrique emphasized: “We played better after the break and could have equalized, but we didn’t seize the chances. At this level, that comes at a cost.”
After four matches, Bayern leads the group with a perfect 12 points, while PSG dropped to third place with 9 points, facing the risk of having to fight for qualification. Nevertheless, Enrique remained calm and affirmed: “I believe this team will bounce back. We have played many good matches, and today’s defeat will help the players grow.”
