Mbappe unexpectedly praises Premier League star upon receiving the Golden Boot

Kylian Mbappe appreciates Xavi Simons’ choice to depart PSG and is confident that the young Dutch midfielder will excel while playing for Tottenham this season.

After winning the 2025 Golden Boot, Kylian Mbappe gave an interview to Marca and praised his former teammate Xavi Simons, who currently plays for Tottenham Hotspur. Mbappe’s comments quickly drew attention since both had spent time together at PSG, where Simons began his professional career.

Mbappe believes that Simons’ decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain in search of playing opportunities was a wise career move. “He is an incredibly talented young player. He made a smart choice by moving to PSV Eindhoven to get regular playing time. When you’re young at a big club, it’s not easy to get chances because everyone wants to play and prove themselves,” Mbappe stated.

Following a breakthrough season at PSV with 22 goals and 11 assists, Xavi Simons was re-signed by PSG in 2023 and loaned to RB Leipzig. His impressive Bundesliga performances led Leipzig to buy him outright, before Tottenham paid around 65 million Euros to bring him to the Premier League at the end of August.

Mbappe believes these steps show that Simons clearly understands his development path: “Then he moved to Leipzig and performed very well. Now Simons is at Tottenham, and I hope he continues to grow and achieve everything he wishes. I wish him the best of luck.”

Currently, Xavi Simons has only one assist in 11 appearances for Tottenham. Although he faces challenges and a less than ideal start in the Premier League, the 22-year-old midfielder is receiving support from many, including Mbappe — a star who once wore the PSG jersey and is now a Real Madrid icon.
