Legend Martin Keown states that Martin Zubimendi is the finest midfielder in Europe at present, highlighting the major impact the Spanish player has on Arsenal’s style under Arteta.
Arsenal are experiencing their most impressive start in many years under coach Mikel Arteta. The "Gunners" are not only excelling in the Premier League but are also considered strong contenders for the Champions League title by experts.
Among this ambitious and energetic squad, the most frequently mentioned name is not Viktor Gyokeres or Eberechi Eze, but Martin Zubimendi, who has earned the full trust and admiration of legend Martin Keown.
The former Arsenal defender, a member of the 2004 "Invincibles," did not hesitate to lavish compliments on the Spanish player:
“The player I believe is currently the best midfielder in Europe is Martin Zubimendi. He plays top-level football, controlling the midfield with a rare calmness and intelligence. I just hope he stays injury-free.”
According to Keown, Zubimendi has provided Arsenal with a perfect structure in midfield. The 26-year-old allows Declan Rice the freedom to move – sometimes pushing forward in attack, other times dropping back to support defense – thanks to his excellent positional sense and situational awareness.
“Zubimendi and Rice create an ideal balance. One provides the foundation, the other makes breakthroughs – exactly what Arsenal lacked in previous seasons,” Keown emphasized.
Joining Arsenal from Real Sociedad during the summer transfer window, Zubimendi initially faced doubts about his ability to adapt to the demanding Premier League environment. However, after only a few months, he dispelled all concerns. The Spanish midfielder not only integrated quickly but also became the silent conductor in Arteta’s possession-based style.
Zubimendi has started every Premier League and Champions League match for Arsenal this season. He stands out for his precise passing, sharp tactical thinking, and especially his composure when operating in tight spaces.
Not only has he made Arsenal’s play more coherent, but Zubimendi has also helped elevate Declan Rice, the team’s former focal point. Thanks to Zubimendi, Rice is freed from tempo-setting duties, allowing him to focus on attacking and pressing higher up the pitch.
Martin Keown concluded: “Zubimendi is the most important player in Arsenal’s current squad. If he maintains this form, Arsenal can realistically aim to win every trophy.”
