Lazio - Juventus: Firing Tudor is not an easy task

While the media predicts that another poor result at Lazio this weekend could officially end Igor Tudor's tenure as Juventus coach, the reality may not be so straightforward.

Juventus fans felt a very hard-to-describe mix of emotions after the 0-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League early this morning. Half was encouragement, as a minimal loss on the road to a much stronger opponent is acceptable, but the other half was profound disappointment at the helplessness of the team they love. Juventus displayed a decent style and spirit, nearly completely limiting the threat from Mbappe and Real Madrid’s stars, losing only due to a somewhat unlucky incident. But what does it mean when they still lose simply because they couldn’t score? Juve created clear chances, better than expected, but wasted them all. Rashness, nervousness, and lack of confidence were what Juventus players showed when given scoring opportunities.

Where is the team that scored 8 goals in 2 matches against Inter and Dortmund a month ago? The 0-1 loss at Bernabeu was Juve’s third consecutive game failing to score and their seventh consecutive match without a win. Even in the darkest days under Thiago Motta, the situation was not this dire.

Tudor will not be dismissed in the near future

However, it appears Tudor’s position remains safe, at least it won’t collapse regardless of the result against Lazio. Football Strategy Director Giorgio Chiellini affirmed that Juventus’ management wants to continue with the Croatian coach, denying media speculation. The reason is understandable since Juve currently does not know who to replace Tudor with. They are said to have contacted at least three names: Luciano Spalletti, Roberto Mancini, and Raffaele Palladino, but all faced difficulties. Spalletti and Mancini have experience and prestige but are not ready to take on the role of repairing a heavily broken machine, while the 41-year-old Palladino might just be another Motta or Tudor.

In reality, Juve’s project went off course from the beginning when their ambitions to hire Antonio Conte or at least Gian Piero Gasperini failed, forcing them to continue with Tudor. Now, firing Tudor to bring in someone who also fails to meet expectations would only make things worse. A long-term commitment to a new coach would be difficult for Juventus if the situation does not improve, while a temporary contract until the end of the season would not attract capable and proud managers. Both advancing or retreating are extremely difficult choices for the "Old Lady".
