Coach Javier Mascherano made notable remarks about Lionel Messi following Inter Miami's victory over Nashville.
Inter Miami secured their first win in the MLS Cup play-off round 1 when they comfortably defeated Nashville at their home stadium.
After the match, Coach Javier Mascherano praised his players' performance highly but also emphasized the need for the team to stay focused in preparation for their away game next weekend.
The Argentine strategist shared: "The opening minutes were quite balanced, but as the game progressed, we improved thanks to some smart adjustments. Honestly, the players showed excellent form.
We played very solidly in defense and managed to control the opponents effectively. Nashville’s style can be dangerous if you don’t press and react quickly. The team learned a lot and made significant adjustments compared to our previous encounter. Still, we need to keep improving.
Of course, the team is happy with the opening victory, but this is just the beginning. Now it's time to rest and focus on preparing for Saturday’s match. The upcoming opponent remains a strong team with many quality players who can pose serious challenges."
Before this match, there were concerns about Lionel Messi missing training earlier in the week. However, the Inter Miami captain dispelled doubts with a brilliant performance (scoring twice), greatly contributing to the Florida club’s win.
Additionally, Messi has officially committed his future to Inter Miami until 2028, continuing to pursue goals with The Herons.
Regarding this matter, Mascherano added: "He could have trained that day, but we wanted to ensure his safety, especially since the session wasn’t critical. Later, he returned over the weekend and performed very well.
Finalizing the contract is a great step forward, allowing everyone to fully focus on the matches and the upcoming season. This was a plan we had prepared for quite some time."
Next weekend, Messi and his teammates will travel to Nashville for the second leg. A win there would secure Inter Miami’s place in the second round of the MLS Cup play-offs.
