Manchester United's 23-year-old Dutch centre-forward Joshua Zirkze hit a career low on the final day of the year when he was set up by manager Ruben Amorim to start against Newcastle United, only to be substituted on 33 minutes. To make matters worse, when he was replaced by Kobe Maynor, the Old Trafford home fans erupted in cheers and the Dutch international put on his coat and walked out into the dressing room crying.
The cheers from the audience at the Theatre of Dreams were clearly not a celebration of Zirkze, nor was it excitement for Academy star Meno when the team was 2-0 down, and the cheers were a sarcasm for Zirkze because he was doing nothing. Of course, it was a double whammy for the players, and United legend Gary Neville also expressed sympathy for him in the commentary.
Zirkze was deployed as a second striker, behind centre-forward Hojlund, but he didn't play at all, with only 14 touches of the ball in half an hour, completing nine passes, zero shots, zero breakaways and zero crosses. Zirkze couldn't hide his disappointment after being substituted, and only briefly greeted Amorim before heading straight to the dressing room. A few minutes later, he calmed down and returned to the bench.
"I feel really sorry for him, really. I know he's making a lot of money, but it's brutal for a player to be cheered and sarcastic by his home fans. We haven't seen much of this at Old Trafford, and I've seen very little here in 43 years." But Neville himself was unsparing in his criticism of Manchester United and Zirkze, saying: "You see the worst team in the country, no exceptions on the pitch!"
Zirkzi has made 26 appearances for United this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists. Apparently not reaching the 42.5 million euro worth and the level of more than £100,000 a week. Neville added: 'I was surprised that when United signed those three or four new signings in the summer, I didn't hear anybody say that Manchester United's transfer signings were terrible. So, I was shocked that these players were so bad in the first few months. I've said before that this club has become a graveyard for players who have a good reputation. Now, it's happening again. When Joro, De Ligt, Ugarte and Zirkze joined this summer, I heard all the United fans say it's good. The problem is, when you see them playing in red shirts here, Manchester United look even worse. That's where the weirdness goes."
Manchester United boss Amorim explained after the game why he replaced Zirkze early. He said: "You have to think about the team and you have to think about the players, and of course the players are in pain. I think the team is suffering and we need another midfielder to get more balls. It was also a really tough decision for me, but I've already spoken to Joshua [Zirkze] because communication is important. Joshua's presence is still important for the team."
Amorim added diplomatically: "I know Joshua is a very nice man. When he walked to the tunnel, I could understand that some people might be in a bad situation, but he was a really good lad. That's life, and we'll support Joshua and move on. Newcastle are better than Manchester United, but they are no better than Joshua."
There was no substance in the remarks, and Zirkze simply lacked the quality and character to play for Manchester United. He is paid more than £100,000 a week and is being ridiculed for his dedication and on-field performance. Workers with a monthly salary of 3,000 will be punished by their bosses if they fail to complete their tasks, and the Red Devils who enjoy astronomical incomes also want to ask the audience who bought tickets to watch the game with their hard-earned money to take care of themselves, they obviously don't deserve this treatment!
In the past, Fellaini, who contributed hard to the team and played well, was often looked down upon by the fans of this team back then, and that is what should be sympathized. As for the many Manchester United players now, as the young fan said, no one is worthy of love, they are all rubbish!
The New Year is just around the corner, and if Zirkze is not purged in the summer window at the latest, it will be yet another proof of United's lack of standards. Returning to his suited Serie A or other slower-paced, less competitive leagues, the Dutch striker has a chance to prove himself again.
