Following Manchester United's 2-0 defeat to Wolves, manager Ruben Amorim sparked transfer rumours with a move at the Molineux Stadium. The 39-year-old Portuguese boss stepped into the pitch and embraced the heart of the opposition, Matheus Cunha, who played the role of the Red Devils' nemesis with a pass and a shot.
Manchester United's failure to freeze Cunha became an important reason for the loss, as he opened the scoring with a direct corner kick and assisted Hwang Hee-chan in stoppage time to seal the win. Interestingly, Cunha has been one of the players rumoured to be a possible move for Manchester United, with the 25-year-old former Atletico Madrid stalwart on the Red Devils' list of transfer rumours in the past.
If Cunha moves to Manchester United, he could play as a central striker in Amorim's 343 formation or one of the two no.10s, replacing Bruno Fernandes, who has been questioned in the last two years. The 30-year-old has almost inevitably fallen under the spell of a new £300,000-a-week contract extension this summer.
In addition to Cunha, Manchester United have also been linked this week with Barcelona's Danny Olmo, who will face registration issues here for the New Year. Rumours have it that if Barcelona are unable to register for it, Olmo could transfer for free. His agent, Andy Bala, is currently revealed to be in Manchester and has also watched Manchester City's match with Everton. If that happens, United will consider signing Olmo, but there's just one problem: the team is in terrible shape and there seems to be no reason for the Spain international to choose to join.
Against Wolves, Fernandes received a yellow card in each half and was sent off with a red card, the first of which was a foul on Cunha. This expulsion will lead to the suspension of B Fee. According to Premier League rules, when a player is sent off for accumulating two yellow cards, he only needs to be suspended for one match. However, if they are red for the second time in the season, they will need to be suspended for an additional game.
Luckily, although Fernandes were sent off in a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham in September, United's straight red appeal for his tackle on James Maddison meant the decision had been reversed. Therefore, the FA will only impose a ban on the red card of B Fee.
Fernandes will miss Manchester United's Premier League clash at home to Newcastle on Monday but can be released from the ban for the second leg of the trip to Anfield and Liverpool in January. Manchester United lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool in the first leg with Ten Hag as manager. At present, Liverpool are at the top of the Premier League, with a seven-point lead with one game in hand. It remains to be seen whether Fernandes will be able to return to the starting line-up in that game, as he was reddened for a needless foul that clearly displeased Amorim and did not comfort him when he left the field.
Amorim has been quite decisive in his handling of players since taking charge of Manchester United, with Rashford having been dropped for four consecutive games. Left-back Tyrell Malacia was also omitted from the squad for the game against Wolves. The 25-year-old Dutch left-back, who started against Bournemouth last time out, opened the scoring with a free-kick and was substituted at half-time and was not included in the squad for this game.
Club sources have confirmed that Malacia's absence from the game against Wolves was due to selection and that he was uninjured. Since Malacia returned from a 550-day knee injury, Amorim has replaced him at half-time in three of his four starts. It is widely believed that Malacia has no future at Manchester United and that the club will bring in a new left-back next year.
Since Amorim took charge of United, he has made 44 changes to a different line-up and eight different line-ups every game, and only made two changes to the starting XI against Wolves, which is the least change he has made.
