Manchester United legend Nani, who recently announced his retirement after 10 days, shared photos of himself dining by the sea with legendary manager Ferguson Fernandes. He is about to celebrate his 83rd birthday at the end of the month, and Nani can be regarded as wishing him an early birthday. The club officially reposted a photo of the two and told fans: "You like to see it."
The 38-year-old said: "Delicious breakfast, this time in Portugal, accompanied by the great and special Sir Alex Ferguson. Good times, good memories. See you next time, boss!"
Nani made his debut at Sporting de Portugal just two years before joining Manchester United in 2007 for £17 million. Under Ferguilla's tutelage, he spent eight years with the Red Devils, winning a number of major titles including four Premier League titles and one Champions League.
Nani, who has now hung up his boots, can naturally talk and laugh with the old gentleman, who has been retired for more than 10 years. But as a player, the Portuguese winger revealed that he was often terrified when facing Alex Ferguson. In particular, on one occasion, after Nani snatched a penalty and returned to the banquet, he was responsible for driving Fergues home when he returned to Manchester, which was quite embarrassing.
In 2010, Ryan Giggs was United's designated penalty taker, but Nani grabbed a penalty against Fulham but was saved by goalkeeper David Stockdale. The missed penalty meant United had to drop points in a 2-2 draw. To make matters worse, after the game, the team took the train from London back to Macclesfield, and Ferguson needed to catch a ride home from the station, and because Nani was his neighbour, he was chosen to drive the angry boss home. The 20-minute drive proved to be a terrifying experience.
"He was angry with me that day!" "But he wanted to take out Ryan Giggs more because he was ready to take the ball and he was the most experienced player on the pitch." Nani explained: "Because I played really well and won a penalty, I wanted to score a penalty. Giggs agreed to give me the penalty. But I lost it! When we got back to the dressing room, Ferguson yelled at Ryan Giggs and asked him why he didn't take the penalty himself. Then he said to me, 'Nani, you should never take a penalty!' 」
He continued, "Then, when we got off the train, we had to go home, and Ferguson lived next door to me, so when someone asked me who could drop by the boss, I said yes. After getting in the car, we didn't say a word. I waited for him to say something to me, but he didn't speak. Finally I took the initiative and said, 'I'm sorry boss, I missed a penalty.'" He said, 'It's okay kid, you could have played better, but it's okay.'" 」
Apart from Fergus, Nani is still in contact with the Manchester United squad and they have a group that includes everyone including Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Cristiano Ronaldo.
"I'm still in touch with almost all of them, we have a WhatsApp group and we talk and laugh with each other, and it's still the same way it used to be, as if we're not getting old," Nani said. That's a beautiful thing. The best part is that we don't forget each other and we know how everybody is doing."
Nani will continue to be associated with football after retiring, and he will be involved in projects such as the Nani Football Academy, and also has a minority stake in Sintrense SAD, a club in Portugal's lower league.
