Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been approached by two clubs from the Saudi Professional League, whose summer transfer window closes on September 23. However, the 32-year-old English center-back is not considering a move now and may only leave after the current season ends.
Maguire’s contract with Manchester United is in its final year, and he intends to remain with the club. This aligns with United’s stance, as they activated his one-year extension option this year and rejected offers from Premier League and Serie A clubs during the summer window.
In January next year, Maguire will be free to negotiate with overseas clubs, but he has said that if the club offers a new contract, he could stay. If no new deal is reached, Maguire will be able to move on a free transfer, potentially securing better terms and a signing bonus.
This season, Maguire scored earlier than the three new forwards bought for over £200 million. Recently, he participated in an event at Stretford High School in Manchester and confirmed that some clubs approached him over the summer, but Manchester United refused to let him go.
“The extension clause can be activated unilaterally by the club; I had no choice and no negotiation was needed. They just activated it, extending my contract,” Maguire said. “The club told other teams over the summer that under no circumstances would they sell me; any interested clubs are aware of this. I believe in the coming months, they will sit down with me to discuss the next steps, whether to renew or take other actions when the January transfer window opens. Until then, I will definitely play for Manchester United.”
Regarding his own plans, Maguire stated: “Obviously, I have already decided what I want to do and who I want to become. I don’t want to share it with everyone, but joining a club like Manchester United is amazing. If you want to leave quickly, that would be foolish. A few clubs might have inquired or talked with Manchester United, but I think they were quickly turned down. As I said, United is in a good position, the atmosphere at the club is positive, and I feel the management and Jason Wilcox are moving in the right direction.”
Maguire added: “I think the structure behind the management has completely changed since I joined six years ago. I feel in great form, and this has lasted for two years now. I feel I am playing well for the club again. I only had a dip in form for about six months, but overall, the last two years have been very good. I have performed better over the past two and a half years.”
He is happy to stay at Old Trafford: “I’m currently in a good place. I get along well with the club and the fans. I have built a real connection with them; it’s a very special place to play football. Representing the club is a huge honor and privilege, and I will always be grateful for that.”
Since his £80 million transfer to Manchester United, Maguire has been with the club for six years, making over 200 appearances. He once lost his starting spot but changed his fate through dedication, and Ruben Amorim has listed him among the six leaders in the dressing room.
Besides the Saudi window still being open, the Turkish Süper Lig clubs can buy players until September 12, so Manchester United is considering selling one of their two goalkeepers, André Onana or Altay Bayındır. The Red Devils made a last-minute £18.2 million signing of 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senna Lammens, who is seen as the future first-choice and expected to compete with one of the two current keepers.
Onana attracted interest from Saudi investors this summer, and many Manchester United fans hope to see him play in the Middle East. “Even a camel would be more useful than Onana,” joked some Red Devils supporters on social media.
He was also linked with Turkish champions Galatasaray, but they ultimately signed Trabzonspor’s Turkish national goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır on Monday. Now Trabzonspor is rumored to be interested in loaning Onana.
However, Manchester United expects it will be difficult to offload Onana, while a return for Bayındır to his homeland Turkey is considered easier to arrange. Currently, neither goalkeeper is willing to transfer.
According to The Sun, Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe considers Onana, Antony, Casemiro, Højlund, and Sancho as players left over from previous management who are underperforming and have high wages. Antony was sold to Betis, Højlund and Sancho loaned to Napoli and Aston Villa respectively. Once Onana is sold and Casemiro’s contract expires at the end of this season, none of these players will remain at United next year.
