Manchester United's Europa League win at Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic on Thursday gave Ten Hag's former favourite Toby Collier a chance to make his debut under Ruben Amorim, with the 20-year-old England midfielder returning from injury and being named in the 24-man squad. At the moment, the Reds are almost fully fit, with only 29-year-old Luke Shaw out injured.
Veteran Evans, who was injured in Amorim's opening game in charge of Ipswich Town, also took part in training at Carrington, although he did not travel with the squad. However, Collier was on the list, having picked up an injury before United's win over Brentford on 19 October, although his last appearance was in a 7-0 Carabao Cup win over Barnsley in September, when he made a cameo at left-back. Collier took part in Manchester United's build-up training on Wednesday as he looks to make his mark in the Europa League. Swedish centre-back Victor Lindelof, like Collier, is back in the matchday squad.
Viktoria plzen are currently second in the Czech domestic league, while Manchester United are in desperate need of a bounce after two consecutive defeats. The Red Devils have been in good form in Europe recently, unbeaten so far, and the team is currently 12th in the group stage of the Europa League, and must finish in the top eight to qualify directly for the knockout rounds, while the 9~24th place will need to enter the play-offs.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Ruben Amorim admitted that he was still deciding which players could stay in his long-term plans for United, and that those who didn't qualify would naturally be sold. Amorim used 20 different starters in his first five games and made 25 substitution attempts.
Amorim explained: "I'm really focused on looking at my players, getting to know my players, and that's one of the problems of the club. We have to focus on what we have first, we have to focus on the academy and have a clear picture of the players. So you have to manage a lot of details, like set-pieces. Sometimes you look at our team and we're a small team compared to other teams! Every detail is important and we have to be very clear about all the processes before we get to the stage of buying and selling players."
Left-back Malacia, who was at the press conference with Amorim, will start the game and get another chance to make a name for himself. Manchester United's new coach bluntly said that if the results are not good, not only the players, but also the others will have to leave. 'We have players like Terrell [Malacia], they are internationals, good players, and we need time to instill new ideas and then see how it goes. Manchester United are big clubs and if you can't win, the players have to leave, the coaches have to leave, you have to know that. As a team we have to improve and we have to arrange a lot of things at the club before we think about buying or selling players. There's a lot of work to be done, so let's focus on improving the players we have, improving our own academy and then we'll see the results.'
Amorim declined to confirm whether any of the players had already been purged, with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Christian Eriksen likely among them, but the 39-year-old said: "I really don't know, the stakes are at stake at this moment, we have a lot of tasks to do. There were a lot of games, we didn't have time to train, the players still had contracts, so we had to wait and see. Now there are new ideas, new coaches, sometimes I have an idea this week and a different idea next week, and we have to analyze it according to the situation at the time, just on the line. There's a lot of games before the January window opens, I don't know, I'm just focused on improving the team, thinking about the next game, not thinking too much. Like any other team, we can do something when the window opens, but now the focus is on winning games, we have to get back to winning and we have to start tomorrow.'
Ahead of January, United sacked sporting director Dan Ashworth, which Amorim admits was a bad situation. "The first thing I want to say is that from day one, I felt a huge amount of support from the boss, Omar (Bellada), Jason (Wilcox), Dan (Ashworth) was one of them, and I really, really, really had Dan's support." "But that's football, sometimes players and coaches come across and I know it's not the best situation, but we have to keep sticking to our ways. The path is clear to everyone and we all know that football can change in a hurry."
But Amorim denied that United had become more precarious than when he took over: "I don't think so. From day one, I had everyone's support, and one person's departure doesn't change everything. Of course, this is a bad situation. He's a professional, but I think the most important thing is to have a clear goal so that it doesn't change just because a person is gone. I don't think there is a disagreement, we want the club to regain the Premier League title and be the elite team it should be. We had to make changes depending on the circumstances, including changing coaches and changing coaches if we didn't get good results. You have goals, though, sometimes you need to adjust them a little, but the goals are the same. We are focused on winning the Premier League and that is the ultimate goal."
