Coach Ruben Amorim has been criticized for benching the star signing Benjamin Sesko for the second consecutive time.
Manchester United continues to spark controversy following a 1-1 draw against Fulham when coach Ruben Amorim once again left Benjamin Sesko on the bench, despite the Red Devils spending over £70 million to acquire the Slovenian striker from RB Leipzig during the summer.
Right after the game, former star Andy Gray harshly criticized Amorim’s decision. He stated that Sesko not starting was “incomprehensible” and disappointed United fans. “I just don’t get it. I’m truly stunned. Sesko is an international player, has experience in the Bundesliga, and has all the qualities to start. With that transfer fee, he should have been on the pitch immediately,” Gray said on beIN SPORTS.
Manchester United entered the summer transfer window with the primary goal of adding a striker. Both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee saw a decline in form last season, forcing the Red Devils to focus all efforts on bringing Sesko to Old Trafford. However, instead of deploying him right away as an attacking solution, Amorim chose to “nurture” Sesko, only using him as a substitute in the first two matches of the season against Arsenal and Fulham.
In the match against Fulham, Mason Mount was surprisingly positioned as the main striker, supported by two expensive new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. This further puzzled fans when comparing Amorim’s immediate trust in Cunha and Mbeumo but cautious approach with Sesko. “If you are a Man United fan, you want to see Sesko playing alongside Cunha and Mbeumo. He had enough preseason time in Germany, is physically fit, and fully ready,” Gray emphasized.
Not only Gray, but former Man Utd midfielder Owen Hargreaves also expressed concern. He believes that the Sesko signing may not solve the goal-scoring issues that plagued the team last season. Moreover, Hargreaves warned that the goalkeeper position might also become a big problem. In the Fulham game, Altay Bayindir unexpectedly started instead of Andre Onana, who was left out of the squad in the defeat to Arsenal.
“I like Mbeumo and Cunha, but the truth is Man United’s attack still lacks a reliable striker. At the back, the goalkeeper spot is also uncertain. I have never seen a team win the title without top stars in both those positions,” Hargreaves analyzed on Premier League Productions.
According to the former player, Manchester United needs to find a solution quickly, as after the home game against Burnley, a relatively easy opponent, they will face a tough run of fixtures against Manchester City and Chelsea.
Clearly, the pressure is building on Ruben Amorim. How he handles the Sesko situation will test his ability to manage the dressing room and maintain fan trust, as supporters eagerly await a true “number 9” to lead the Red Devils’ attack.
