Official: MU announces the most anticipated signing of summer 2025

Manchester United has officially appointed Stephen Torpey as Academy Director, with the expectation that he will maintain and advance the club’s famous youth training legacy in the new era.

Manchester United has just announced Stephen Torpey as the new Academy Director, succeeding Nick Cox who will move to Everton. This is a significant decision amid the context of MU undergoing a comprehensive restructuring from the first team to youth development efforts, aiming to build a solid foundation for the future.

Torpey joins MU from Brentford, where he played a key role in rebuilding the youth system, restarting the Academy program from U9 to U18. He has nearly two decades of coaching and management experience, having worked at prestigious academies like Manchester City and Liverpool. Torpey was the one who discovered and nurtured talents such as Cole Palmer and James McAtee during his time at Man City.

On his debut day, Torpey expressed pride in leading MU’s historic academy: “I am truly honored to have the opportunity to lead the Manchester United Academy. This is clearly a fantastic time to join the club as it embarks on an exciting new era; I look forward to continuing the incredible tradition of youth development here.

After working closely with the leadership team, it is clear the academy will always be key to Man Utd’s identity. Our top priority is to develop players ready to support the first team and compete for the biggest trophies.”

This decision comes at a time when MU is undergoing many strategic changes. Alongside building a new training ground, the club is actively adjusting its personnel and developing community engagement programs to enhance brand value. The academy — the “cradle” that produced legends like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, and Marcus Rashford — remains the backbone of the Red Devils’ development philosophy.

Torpey will officially take on his role soon, while Nick Cox will continue to assist with the transition before moving to Everton as technical director. With his extensive experience and impressive track record, Torpey is expected to help MU maintain its leading position in youth development and ensure a steady supply of quality players for the first team for many years to come.
