WTT Swedish Grand Slam: Women’s singles round of 16 decided, 7 Chinese players, 5 Japanese players, and a major upset for Miwa Harimoto.

On August 21st, Beijing time, the WTT Swedish Grand Slam women’s singles round of 1/16 wrapped up, and the top 16 are now set. China dominated with 7 places, Japan claimed 5, and the most surprising result was Miwa Harimoto losing 2-3 to Bruna, an outcome few expected!

The Chinese women’s team sent 9 players to compete in singles, all of whom advanced past the first round. In the second round, Qian Tianyi and He Zhuojia were eliminated, leaving 7 players who advanced strongly and faced little resistance!

Just recently crowned champion in Yokohama, Chen Xingtong faced France’s Pavade and had quite a tough challenge. She started slowly and lost the first game 8-11. In the second game, she quickly adjusted, winning 11-8 to even the score. The third game saw her take control, dominating 11-6. The fourth was a fierce battle, but she managed to edge out her opponent 12-10. With a 3-1 win, Chen Xingtong safely advanced to the round of 16!

World No.1 Sun Yingsha took on French veteran Yuan Jianan. Sun came out swinging in the first game, overpowering her opponent 11-2. Yuan fought back strongly in the second, with Sun struggling and losing 6-11. The match then shifted back to Sun’s rhythm; she took the third game 11-5 by pulling ahead, and continued her momentum in the fourth, scoring consistently to win 11-6. Sun Yingsha advanced to the round of 16 with a 3-1 victory!

Rising star Chen Yi faced South Korea’s Joo Chianxi, sweeping her opponent 3-0. Although the scoreline was decisive, each game was closely contested: 11-8, 11-9, and 11-9. This shows Chen Yi’s excellent control in crucial moments and her increasingly stable performance, earning her a spot in the last 16!

Five Japanese players made it to the last 16, but the biggest shock of the day was Miwa Harimoto’s exit. Facing Brazil’s Bruna, Harimoto struggled early and lost the first game after failing to capitalize on key points. She bounced back, dominating the next two games to take the lead. Under pressure, Bruna’s determination paid off as she leveled the score. In the decisive game, Bruna played with confidence and surged ahead, winning 3-2 and knocking Harimoto out in a major upset—truly unexpected!

With this, the women’s singles round of 16 for this event is set: China has claimed 7 spots and Japan 5. The upcoming round of 1/8 will feature several exciting China-Japan clashes—get ready for some intense matches! For the full list, see the image above!
