Vietnamese cueist Dương Quốc Hoàng was defeated by Hayato Hijikata (Japan) in his first match at the 2025 US Open Billiards Championship.
Dương Quốc Hoàng, the top billiards player in Vietnam, had an unsteady start at the 2025 US Open, losing 3-9 to Hayato Hijikata (Japan) in his opening match held early on August 19 (Hanoi time). This wasn’t the first time Hoàng Sao had trouble against the Japanese competitor, as he also lost to him at the Chinese Pool Duya Legends Tour three months ago.
Hijikata stood out for his steady play and precise execution, quickly taking a 5-0 lead and preventing Hoàng Sao from playing at his best. This loss sent Dương Quốc Hoàng into the losers' bracket, where he will face Jj Faul—a player he beat at the World Pool Championship just a month ago.

Sharing Dương Quốc Hoàng’s fate were other Vietnamese players, including Nguyễn Hoàng Nhật, Nguyễn Hoàng Tuấn, Nguyễn Hải Đăng, Lê Quang Trung, Trần Trung Anh, and Nguyễn Thắng. On the other hand, Nguyễn Anh Tuấn and Lường Đức Thiện performed impressively, defeating Daniel Klochenok 9-4 and Dimitris Loukatos 9-3, respectively, while Thiện Lương even beat Denis Grabe 9-0 after overcoming Charles Darwin Vergara 9-4. Phạm Phương Nam also got off to a good start with a 9-2 victory over Glen Davis and will meet Marco Teutscher in the next round.
The US Open 2025 takes place from August 18 to 24 at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, USA, bringing together many of the world’s top players with a total prize fund of $500,000, of which the winner receives $100,000. The tournament is split into two phases: a double-elimination stage and a knockout round to determine the champion.
Vietnamese players competing in the 2025 US Open include Dương Quốc Hoàng, Phạm Phương Nam, Lường Đức Thiện, Nguyễn Anh Tuấn, Nguyễn Thắng, Lê Quang Trung, Trần Trung Anh, Nguyễn Hoàng Nhật, Nguyễn Hoàng Tuấn, and Nguyễn Hải Đăng.
