On August 20, 2025, at the US Open Pool Championship 2025 held at Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City, USA, Vietnam's top cueist Dương Quốc Hoàng showed great composure by winning two straight matches in the losers' bracket, keeping his hopes of advancing further in this prestigious World Nineball Tour event alive.
This tournament brings together 256 of the world’s leading cueists, with a total prize pool of $500,000, of which the champion will earn $100,000.
Dương Quốc Hoàng, also known as "Hoàng Sao," entered the losers’ bracket after a first-round defeat. In his opening match there, he faced Jj Faul (South Africa), an opponent he had previously beaten at the 2025 World Pool Championship. Although he was not at his best, Quốc Hoàng took full advantage of his opponent’s errors and a bit of good fortune to claim an 8-4 win. Building on that victory, he then played Dean Shields, who had bested him at the 2024 Hanoi Open. This time, "Hoàng Sao" started off behind at 3-1, but then exploded with six straight rack wins. Even though Shields managed to pull two games back after a missed 5-ball, Quốc Hoàng held his lead to finish 8-5. His much-improved break shot secured him a place in round three of the losers’ bracket, where he will face Marc Bijsterbosch (Netherlands).
Elsewhere, Nguyễn Anh Tuấn became a highlight for Vietnamese billiards by impressively defeating renowned player David Alcaide (Spain) in the winners’ bracket decider, making him the first Vietnamese to advance to the knockout stage. Nguyễn Hoàng Tuấn also displayed strong form in the losers’ bracket, moving into round three to face Harry Vergara (Philippines). However, other Vietnamese players such as Phạm Phương Nam, Nguyễn Hoàng Nhật, Nguyễn Hải Đăng, Nguyễn Thắng, Lê Quang Trung, and Trần Trung Anh had to bow out after defeats in the losers’ bracket.
Previously, at the 2025 Battle of the Bull, Dương Quốc Hoàng made headlines by eliminating world number one Fedor Gorst with a 9-6 victory in the round of 16, though he later exited in the semifinals against Johann Chua (5-11). Ranked 28th in the world by Matchroom, Quốc Hoàng continues to be Vietnam’s greatest hope at the 2025 US Open.
