LOL Global Regional Updates: 5 Teams Advance to the Pioneer Tournament, Unemployed LPL Coach Wins Championship in Vietnam

The League of Legends 2026 Global Pioneer Tournament is set to kick off in just 14 days. Of the six major regions granted qualification slots, the majority have already decided their representatives. After the competitive format overhaul this year, the top two regions each received two slots, raising the total Pioneer team count by two from last year. During the last match day, five regions concurrently held their finals, which directly confirmed 5 teams for the Pioneer event.

The LCK region's slot was secured after BFX defeated DK. In the finals, BFX and GEN competed for the championship. While the dark horse BFX faced little pressure against other teams, the gap in strength became evident against the domestic powerhouse GEN. GEN swept BFX 3:0 to claim the LCK Cup title. Although BFX didn't lift the trophy, they still earned a Pioneer Tournament slot, a result that already exceeded expectations.

In the LEC region, G2 and KC battled for the title in a full five-game series, with G2 ultimately winning to secure both the championship and a Pioneer Tournament berth. Their match was dubbed a "niche masterpiece of absurdity." Despite G2 holding Dragon Soul, Elder Dragon, and Baron, and having taken all three lanes, they still lost team fights. Just as KC seemed poised to reverse the game, G2's top and jungle simultaneously backdoored to end the match. Both teams delivered an exceptionally wild performance.

The Brazilian finals, like the LCK's, were a quick affair. LLL defeated RED in three straight games, easily claiming the title and securing a spot in the Global Pioneer Tournament. This series was a one-sided domination, leaving little else to remark on. The LCP region also held its finals yesterday, where TSW swept DCG 3:0 to win the league championship and will subsequently represent LCP in the Pioneer Tournament.

During the winter transfer window, TSW signed Warhorse, an LPL world champion coach. Following his arrival, TSW experienced a rapid rise, demonstrating how a good coach can significantly elevate a team. Despite being unemployed in the LPL, Warhorse moved to LCP and delivered a dominant performance. This suggests other unemployed LPL coaches might follow his example and explore opportunities in other regions, potentially reviving their careers and gaining international exposure.

To summarize the current Pioneer Tournament qualified teams: 5 of the 8 slots are confirmed. They are GEN and BFX from LCK, G2 from LEC, TSW from LCP, and LLL from CBLOL. The remaining three slots include two for LPL and one for LCS. In North America, the finals are ongoing; at the time of writing, LYON leads C9 2:1, and the series could go to five games, or LYON might close it out 3:1.

Our region's first Pioneer slot will also be decided soon. The winners' bracket final between BLG and JDG takes place on the 4th, with the winner advancing to the grand final and securing a Pioneer slot. The second slot will take a few more days, as the first round of the losers' bracket just concluded. In the lower bracket, IG easily defeated NIP and will face AL next. IG's journey will likely end here, as it's improbable they can overcome AL regardless of their performance.

Personally, I believe our region's Pioneer teams will only come from JDG, BLG, or AL. The remaining squads are simply not on the same competitive level as these three. AL's strength in the losers' bracket is in a league of its own; barring any surprises, they should definitely reach the losers' bracket final to face the loser of JDG vs. BLG. Of course, we can't completely rule out a strong push from Weibo Gaming or Top Esports.

In conclusion:

With more teams in this year's Global Pioneer Tournament, the schedule will be slightly longer than last year's. Among the already qualified teams, GEN is undoubtedly the strongest. Hopefully, our LPL can achieve a respectable result in the Pioneer Tournament. Winning the championship might be a tall order, but having at least one team reach the top three should be the minimum acceptable outcome.

So, which two LPL teams do you think will qualify?
