Can't restart with a five-mage lineup? Actually, the rules were changed long ago; picking a marksman is more reliable for a guaranteed restart.

Hello everyone, I'm Game Xiaodi.

I wonder how many players still remember that Honor of Kings' ranked matches actually had a restart function, but since the lane pre-selection feature was introduced, the number of restarts has greatly decreased. Recently, I saw a post that sparked a heated discussion: a ranked match selected five mages, but in the end, the game wasn't restarted and proceeded normally. What's going on? In this episode, let's talk about why five mages don't easily trigger a restart, and how to choose to reliably trigger the restart mechanism.

Why five mages don't easily trigger a restart

First, let's look at the specific lineup of five mages: Xiao Qiao, Yang Yuhuan, Chang'e, Wang Zhaojun, and Bian Que. At first glance, they all seem to be mid-lane heroes. However, Xiao Qiao is currently mainly played in the mid lane; Yang Yuhuan, besides mid, was previously popular in jungle and support roles; Chang'e, besides mid, is commonly seen in both jungle and top lanes; Wang Zhaojun, besides mid, is now often used as a support; and for Bian Que, there is a well-known marksman-lane playstyle.

With this analysis, it's easy to see that these five mages can actually cover all five lanes. The most reasonable assignment would be: top lane Chang'e, jungle Yang Yuhuan, mid lane Xiao Qiao, marksman lane Bian Que, and support Wang Zhaojun. As early as 2024, the official patch for the restart function in ranked matches added a rule: if the selected lineup covers all five lanes, the restart will not be triggered. The above lineup just meets this condition, so no restart was triggered.

How to choose to reliably trigger a restart?

The mage class seems to be a "jack-of-all-trades" in the game: besides firmly holding the mid lane, they can also jungle (e.g., Chang'e, Yang Yuhuan), go top lane (e.g., Diao Chan, Hainuo), or even roam (e.g., Xi Shi, Zhang Liang). So, if you want to restart with five mages, it's best to choose heroes that can only play mid lane, such as Zhen Ji, Angela, Xiao Qiao, Shangguan Wan'er, Gan Jiang Mo Xie, etc.

Of course, the safest way to restart, in my opinion, is to directly pick marksmen. Because marksmen have the least positional flexibility. Early on, there were free-position playstyles like Diao Chan and Marco Polo as junglers, and Bai Li Shou Yue as a mid-laner, but these are now outdated and no longer applicable after the version updates. At present, it seems only Li Yuanfang can jungle; the rest are mostly locked into the marksman lane. So, choosing marksmen makes it hard to cover all five lanes, making a restart more likely.

But honestly, the restart mechanism itself exists only to deal with extremely unreasonable lineups. Using it occasionally for an emergency is fine, but if you keep restarting, there will be penalty mechanisms. So, don't abuse it. If you really have a lane conflict, discussing a swap with teammates is also an option.
