India, after losing their opening batsmen Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal within the first 10 overs, recovered momentum when Kohli (102) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (105) put together a 195-run partnership for the third wicket, followed by an unbeaten collaboration between captain KL Rahul (66) and Ravindra Jadeja to reach 358-5.
Markram (110) notched his fourth ODI century off 88 balls, building vital partnerships with captain Temba Bavuma (46) and Matthew Breetzke (68), before Dewald Brevis quickly scored a fifty as South Africa closed in on their target.
Tony de Zorzi contributed a rapid 17 runs off 11 balls before having to retire due to a hamstring injury, but Corbin Bosch and Keshav Maharaj steered the team to victory with four balls remaining, marking South Africa's third-largest successful ODI chase.
The final and deciding third match of the series is scheduled to be played in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.
