This offseason, many fans are eagerly hoping that the Warriors will make some improvements, but so far, they have not signed any players and have instead lost some veteran players. Looney was drafted by the Warriors and has diligently played for the team for ten seasons. However, this offseason, he did not receive a contract extension from the Warriors, and ultimately the Pelicans offered Looney a contract, marking his departure from his original team in his tenth year of professional career.
In the past two seasons, Looney has not received full trust from Kerr, and his playing time has been inconsistent. In fact, Looney has significant objections to the way Kerr has utilized him. After signing with the Pelicans, he expressed his dissatisfaction with his former team. He believes that he did not receive adequate trust from the Warriors, and his playing time was very unstable. Moreover, he felt that during last season's playoffs against the Rockets, he was particularly skilled in matching up against Adams. However, the Warriors coaching staff still did not grant him sufficient playing time. From Looney's perspective, his situation with the Warriors over the past two years has been quite uncertain.
Many fans also have objective evaluations of Looney. There is no denying that he has some strengths, such as his excellent screen-setting and rebounding ability. However, Looney does have several weaknesses on the court that can be easily targeted by opponents. For example, his footwork is somewhat slow when defending against pick-and-rolls. When facing some guards, he no longer possesses the agility he had in his younger days, making it easy for guards to get past him. Additionally, Looney can affect the team's offensive spacing because he is not a shooting big man.
The reason the Warriors have not utilized Looney in the past two years, in my opinion, is based on two considerations. One is the current emphasis on overall defense, including rim protection. Looney can be targeted by opposing guards, and his rim protection ability is quite average. Furthermore, when he is on the court, the team's spacing becomes very congested. There are many instances when he receives the ball without anyone around him, yet he still looks for handoff plays with Curry, which renders many of the Warriors' half-court offensive strategies ineffective. This is also why Kerr prefers to use Poole, as Poole possesses shooting ability, which can diversify the Warriors' tactics.
Regardless, we wish Looney the best in the Pelicans and hope he can prove his value there. We hope that one day he can return to the Warriors and retire as a member of the team.
