Yang Hansun has been named a winner of the Summer League! The team reporter elaborates on the current challenges and sees potential for him to become a starter in the future.

On July 22, Beijing time, the well-known American media CBS Sports announced the winners and losers of this Summer League, with Yang Hansun appearing on the winners' list. Additionally, Trail Blazers reporter Dave Deckard analyzed Hansun's current issues and believes he has the potential to become an NBA starter in the future.

When CBS listed Hansun as one of the winners, it mentioned that Yang Hansun has become a household name. Here is a brief analysis from CBS——

“During the Las Vegas Summer League, Yang Hansun is one of the players with the most significant increase in value. This first-round pick of the Trail Blazers delivered multiple highlight performances throughout the Summer League, averaging 10.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. What truly sets Yang Hansun apart is his passing ability—his passing skills are top-notch for a big player, which provides the Trail Blazers, who aim for a breakthrough in the upcoming season, with the much-needed playmaking ability.”

“When the Trail Blazers selected him, many were surprised because it was thought that Yang Hansun would be picked in the mid-second round. It was a bold decision. This choice could either become one of the most successful cases in draft history or one of the worst. Although the sample size from the Summer League is small, it seems that the Trail Blazers made the right call,he is undoubtedly one of the big winners of this Summer League.

Trail Blazers reporter Dave Deckard, when interacting with fans, was asked if Yang Hansun would become the starting center for the Trail Blazers. Here is Dave's interpretation——

I believe that Yang Hansun is not immediately ready to be a starter, but he has the potential to become one someday.I can't even guess how high his ceiling is, but it’s certainly high enough to keep you excited!

From the first game of the season to reaching his ceiling, there will be various bumps along the way. Larger opponents will try to overpower him physically, while smaller opponents will use speed to get past him. This is true for all players who are 2.16 meters tall.

However, several advantages will aid his development in this regard. He is not afraid of physical contact, and given his size, he is quite agile.I think his lateral movement looked pretty good in Las Vegas. I guess Yang Hansun will adapt to the NBA style of play as well as any other rookie making the transition.

It is evident in the Summer League that his core strength and lower body strength need improvement.Even smaller opponents can push him around, causing him to lose his balance. This should not happen to a player of his size. He needs to learn to use his body better when not facing the basket upright.

Rebounding will be another area to focus on, especially considering the current roster of the Trail Blazers. In the Summer League, Yang Hansun did reasonably well in boxing out opponents to prevent rebounds, but he was not aggressive enough when going for his own rebounds, and his efficiency was low.

In theory, this can be improved, but there are two issues. First, due to the aforementioned strength and physicality issues, he cannot box out all NBA opponents. Secondly, equally important, who is he boxing out for? The Trail Blazers currently lack strong rebounders outside of the center position. Even if there are some players with decent rebounding ability, the team hopes they can fast-break instead of crashing the boards. Ayton and Clingan had good rebounding performances last season, and this is not coincidental. If Yang Hansun cannot do this, his team may be affected.

Yang Hansun has performed well in the high post and mid-range, but his performance on the wings and in the diagonal areas—especially on defense—will be tested. If he starts to become a threatening factor, opponents will try to push him to the sidelines, forcing him to defend the corners. Whether he can arrive in time, perform effectively once there, recover quickly, and have enough stamina to do all this while still performing well remains to be seen. Transition offense may also pose similar challenges to his endurance.

Finally, if he wants to play in the high post and deliver those exciting passes that people love, he needs to have a shooting threat there.A stable three-point shot would be very helpful, but at the very least, he must be able to hit shots from the top of the arc. Otherwise, defenders will just back off, either cutting off passes or blocking in front of the receiver. In that case, his passing ability will remain more theoretical than a real threat.

These are the first challenges Yang Hansun faces upon entering the NBA, and there will be more in the future. Overall, there is reason to feel optimistic so far. Trail Blazers fans can look forward to him maintaining good form at every step.In this league, you don't have to cross the finish line right from the start to be considered successful. If Yang Hansun can overcome these obstacles one by one, he will carve out a place for himself in the league and give you countless reasons to cheer.
