It's official! The Lakers might be making their first trade by letting go of a 28-year-old guard.

Shams: The Lakers have waived 28-year-old guard Milton to make room for signing Smart.According to earlier reports, the Lakers plan to sign Smart for two years at $11 million, with a player option in the last year.

However, after waiving Milton, his non-guaranteed salary stands at $3 million, leaving the Lakers still short on space to sign Smart, indicating that additional moves will be needed.

According to reports from American media,the Lakers are working on a consolidation trade, likely involving Knickett and Kleber.If successful, this would mark the Lakers' first trade of the summer involving players as assets.

It seems Knickett is ultimately facing the fate of being traded. Back in February, he was supposed to be packaged with Reddish and an unprotected first-round pick plus a draft swap to the Hornets for a high-stakes deal, but the trade dramatically fell through due to the latter's failed physical.

However, it's not surprising that Knickett is being traded again; after returning from a failed trade last season, his performance severely declined, and he has gradually fallen out of the rotation. In this summer league, he struggled with averages of 11.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.2 steals, with shooting percentages of just 32.1% and 23.7%, which is disappointing for a former first-round pick at number 17.

If the Lakers choose not to trade but instead opt for further cuts to create salary space for signing Smart, the next to go could be 26-year-old guard Goodwin, whose salary of $2.3 million for the new season has only $25,000 guaranteed.

In summary, whether through trades or cuts, the Lakers are set on acquiring Smart.

So far this summer offseason, the Lakers' main moves are as follows:

Signing wing shooter Larravia for two years at $12 million;

Signing 2018 first overall pick Ayton for two years at $16.6 million;

Re-signing Hays for one year at $3.44 million;

Signing former DPOY Smart for two years at $11 million;

The Lakers' core framework for the 2025-26 season is nearly complete, undoubtedly showing a comprehensive upgrade compared to last season, providing stronger confidence to compete for the championship.

Last season, the Lakers, who traded Davis for Doncic, had an outstanding regular season with a record of 50 wins and 32 losses, finishing third in the West. However, this year they faced a tough blow in the playoffs, losing 1-4 in the first round to the sixth-seeded Timberwolves.
