The third person in the history of the Thunder! Alexander was named the MVP of the regular season: the international star has won seven in a row

On May 22, Beijing time, Shams reported that the 2024-25 regular season MVP belongs to Thunder star Alexander. He beat Jokic and Antetokounmpo to win the award for the first time in his career. Starting with the 2022-23 season, the NBA named the trophy the Michael Jordan Award.

The 26-year-old Alexander averaged 32.7 points, five rebounds and 6.4 assists per game in the regular season this season. Counting Alexander, the regular season MVP of the last 7 years are all players born outside the United States, and the last time a domestic player won this award was Harden in the 2017-18 season.

Alexander won 60+ wins in a single season and became the leading scorer, joining the "elite club" in NBA history. This achievement (scoring title and 60+ wins in the same season) has appeared 10 times in NBA history, with the only time it was not accompanied by an MVP in 1996-97, when the Jazz's Karl Malone defeated Jordan to win the award.

This is the third consecutive season that Alexander has averaged at least 30 points per game while shooting over 50 percent from the field. The players who have done it before — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Antetokounmpo, Chamberlain, and Jordan — have all won multiple MVPs.

Alexander is also a major contributor to the Thunder's top-tier defense. He has contributed 208 "steals + blocks" this season, ranking third in the league, behind the Spurs' Wembanyama and the Hawks' Daniels.

Alexander's election as the regular season MVP of the season is not only the choice of more media people, but also the support of more players. The Athletic previously conducted anonymous voting interviews with players, with 155 players voting for MVP. Alexander was in first place with 56.1 percent of the vote, and Jokic was second with 37.4 percent.

After being named to the NBA's All-NBA Team for the past two seasons, Alexander is eligible to sign an unprecedented four-year, $294 million super-cap contract extension this summer. If completed, it would be the most average annual contract in league history ($73.3 million)

The NBA has been selecting regular season MVPs since the 1955-56 season, and the player with the most awards in history is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who has been elected six times. Jordan and Russell are tied for second with five times. Chamberlain and James are tied for fourth with four times.

So far, only one person in the NBA has been unanimously elected MVP, and he is the Warriors' Curry. In the 2015-16 season, Curry averaged 30.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game, and won both the scoring and steal titles, and the Warriors had a 73-9 regular season best record. In the end, Curry received all 131 first-place votes and was unanimously elected MVP.
