Is Westbrook's last NBA game over? No takers in free agency, a coach advises Heat not to sign him

As reported by Sidery on July 27, Russell Westbrook has almost no interest in free agency. He could very well remain without a contract when the 2026-27 season begins. Having played for seven teams over the last nine years, the likely Hall of Fame inductee might be approaching the final chapter of his career.

According to Heat reporter Barry Jackson this week, an NBA coach recently advised Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra not to sign Westbrook in free agency. There have been persistent rumors that the Heat are interested in bringing in Westbrook to bolster their point guard position, but the coach told Spoelstra bluntly that Westbrook is difficult to coach.

Earlier this week, more unfavorable news about Westbrook emerged. Westbrook played for the Sacramento Kings last season. Bleacher Report reporter Jake Fischer revealed during a livestream that he has heard nothing indicating the Kings are willing to re-sign Westbrook in any capacity.

Westbrook will turn 38 in November and remains an unsigned free agent. Last season, he signed a veteran minimum contract worth $3.6 million with the Kings, averaging 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game.

A nine-time All-Star, Westbrook's playing style has always been unpredictable. But at this stage, his drawbacks far outweigh his strengths. In the past, his explosive athleticism and speed could cover up many issues; now, with 18 years of NBA experience, Westbrook frequently disrupts offensive systems, pads stats, and makes inexplicable, baffling turnovers.

As for the Heat, the team needs to strengthen its backcourt to orchestrate the offense for the new frontcourt duo of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, building an efficient system. However, the right candidate is likely not Russell Westbrook. Recent reports indicate that the Heat may target other options for their backcourt upgrade.
