Is James really joining the 76ers? His remarks about "trusting the process" spark heated discussions, responding to Silver's urging for him to make a decision.

On July 18, Beijing time, LeBron James, while talking about his impending NBA free agency choice, uttered a catchphrase closely associated with the Philadelphia 76ers, causing an immediate uproar among fans.

This dialogue occurred during the live show of the New York sports carnival "The Shop," where James said: "The most important thing is that I want to win, to compete at the highest level. I hope to join a team that shares my vision, where we all hold the same belief: the path to a championship lies in day-to-day effort. And above all, it's about trusting the process."

The phrase "Trust the Process" has been synonymous with the 76ers since their rebuilding period around 2013, and later, the team's center Joel Embiid earned the nickname "The Process."

The show's co-host told James that the audience's strong reaction to his words was because the phrase is so deeply tied to the 76ers. James responded, "I've been saying 'Trust the Process' since I entered the league as a rookie in 2003. Embiid probably wasn't even born then."

After James informed the Los Angeles Lakers last month that he would be seeking a new team next season, transfer rumors have never stopped. Yesterday, during a live broadcast of his podcast "Mind the Game" at the sports carnival, James revealed he was not yet ready to announce his next destination but added, "I won't keep everyone waiting too long." Today, James reiterated that he still has no final decision to share.

This week, renowned reporter Shams revealed on a show the few teams that have a realistic chance of signing James. He indicated that the Warriors and Timberwolves are still in the race, but the 76ers, Cavaliers, and Heat are the primary focus for James at this stage. The 76ers became a hot contender after a blockbuster trade on July 2: the team sent Paul George and multiple draft picks to the Celtics in exchange for All-Star Jaylen Brown, a move that shocked the league. With Brown joining, the 76ers have assembled a top-tier talent lineup, pairing him with reigning MVP Joel Embiid, two-time All-Star Tyrese Maxey, and 2025 No. 3 pick Edey.

Many believe that for the 41-year-old James, who is about to enter his 24th NBA season, the 76ers represent his best chance to pursue a fifth championship, which is the core reason why many expect him to head to Philadelphia. However, James has previously led the Cavaliers and Heat to titles, and both former teams remain strong contenders as potential landing spots.

James will not rush his free agency decision for anyone, not even NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Silver previously stated that the league delayed the release of the 2026-27 season schedule specifically to wait for James to decide on his next team, a remark James called "absurd." The 41-year-old veteran made it clear he would not announce his new team at this event.

"Folks, I don't have any decision to announce right now," he said.

Earlier, Silver admitted in an interview at a CNBC event that James's decision would directly affect multiple key scheduling milestones.

"We have to finalize the full schedule, and LeBron's new team will influence the arrangement... Opening week and Christmas Day games will be affected," Silver said. "So I need him to make a decision as soon as possible."

But James clearly intends to take his time and not rush into a conclusion. Although James himself has not confirmed that he will retire after next season, it is widely believed that the 2026-27 season will likely be his last, so it makes perfect sense for him to take ample time to evaluate his options. However, while he slowly weighs all his choices, Silver and the entire NBA league can only put their preparations on hold.
